On August 19th, Russell Kanning told the Keene District court that he would perform community service in lieu of a fine for driving without a license. Almost three weeks later, he gives viewers an update on his status and plans.

It says the video is not available.

This is pathetic. Russell said that he would perform the hours and now he's going back on his word. If he didn't want to bow down to the state he should have not plead or plead not guilty. He agreed to accept a specific punishment and now hasn't carried out the obligation that to which he voluntarily agreed.

Russell seems to have given himself some wiggle room with the "it's possible" comment before the judge.

The sad thing is that he decided to move away from Keene and not live up to the new Thoreau/Gandhi figure he first portrayed himself as.

All talk and lil play makes Russ a dull boy.

AHASP- I don't recall any portion of the video where Russell out right stated or even implied that he wouldn't follow through. Procrastination does not equate rejection.

It seems as though Russell moved from Keene because he is afraid. He's not a leader I would be willing to follow. He doesn't even recognize his obligation to financially support his off spring. That's all I need to know in order to measure him as a man and as a leader.

I do fret for the movement with people like Russell leading the way.

Perhaps there are some misconceptions here that seem to be over looked. Whom is RUSSELL contracting with? It can not be said that Russell is contract with the State since the STATE exists only as a piece of paper and Russell being a living soul, he can not contract with the STATE. Fictions and non-fictions can not interact with each other.

The so-called 'corporate STATE' argument aside, to say that Russell has contracted with anyone to provide so-called community service is a bit of a stretch, as has been pointed out he did not agree, he just agreed to discuss.

"Don't fret", please help me to understand how one has an obligation to one's children? As I understand things, a child can not consent, ergo a child can not contract. Only contracts can create obligations to perform, without a contract one has no obligation to do anything. The relationship between child and parent is similar in the relationship one has with a dog or cat, since too these can not contract as well. So long as said cat/dog wish to live under my roof, then I have some expectations of them, as it is my property and not theirs. I do not create an obligation upon them, merely expectations with whatever consequences for failure of those expectations.

They can at anytime leave my house, just as my child is free to leave my house if he decides he doesn't like my expectations. Again, my house, my rules. Don't like them, leave.

So to say that Russell has an obligation to his children is nothing more then propaganda designed to control others.

My comments may seem harsh, and one might say I am a bad parent. I ask you, if you were to die tomorrow would your children be able to live without you, or would they rely upon another in order to survive? I rest easily knowing my child will be able to survive without me, for I teach him lessons about life and strive not to protect him from every bad choice he might make. Further I am reminded of a very old saying, 'judge thee not, lest ye be judged'.

I think civil disobedience is far more effective when a large and persistent group partakes in it.

Mr. Kanning was smart to not pick a fight over this lonely charge.

    @ Don't fret —

Some people are choosing to make Russ their role model; this by definition much makes him a "leader."

That said, those people are a minority of the full set of Free State Project participants.

Former Keene city councilor / KPD detective Fred Parsells' posts are so easy to spot. I'll let you guess which one he is.

Why not post with your identity in the clear, Fred?

    Don't Fred:

I experience your comments as stuck in today's context. The FSP is not filled with followers waiting for someone to tell them what to do. I understand that this is your context for how the world works. Russell is his own person, free to make his own decisions.

Based on our individual experience of Russell we are each free to decide for ourselves how, when, and in what capacity we support or ostracize Russell for his actions.

I really believe we all do what we think best given our circumstances. I understand your eagerness to see full scale civil disobedience and market based activism.

That will come with time and numbers. I encourage you to start talking whatever small steps towards freedom you feel are appropriate. Perhaps then you can begin to understand the true nature of courage.
