Came across this via a videosift.com about Sam Dodson's false imprisonment and recent release, and just saw this. I've never been in trouble with the law, but have family who have been (for their own dumb, alcoholic induced reasons), but it's seeing stuff like this that ticks me off and turns me against the police. I know my rights, and it's always good to see when others do as well. Keep fighting the good fight!

To the Editor

Title: technology and police transparency

I am concerned about recent encounters involving police and the public e.g.:

-	Plymouth 24 Dec.2008 – fatality
-	Barnstable 21 Sept. 2008 – fatality
-	Brocton 7 Nov. 2008 - fatality
-	Plymouth 10 June 2006 – fatality

and others some of which were less serious but included an abuse of police power (physically/verbally) or filing of unwarranted charges.

In most cases the witnesses are police and police reports are used by the media. When encounters were captured on camera (Youtube N.Y.C. July 2008; Oakland Calif. 2008)
the police version was shown to be in error and the officers indicted.

If the A.G. determines an investigation is appropriate it is done by the state police.

If honest officers witness excesses they must choose between truthfulness and likely retaliation or corroborating the report by bearing false witness or remaining silent which damages their conscience/morale.

I offer the following suggestions for improvement:

1.	Screen police applicants for those who may use the power to improve a deficient self image.
2.	Train recruits that foul language and excessive force are never justified and role play situations where misconduct is witnessed and how to report it.

3.	Place micro- cameras on all patrol vehicles and SWAT team members.

4.	Appoint a group independent of the police to investigate fatalities.

These measures would encourage more professional conduct and honest officers would be removed from “the horns of a dilemma”… Likewise a person charged with misconduct would have a “witness” that is impartial.

The cost of these improvements would be offset by the reduced congestion/expense of needless court appearances.

It is time for technology to contribute to the transparency of police actions.

Pete, if my suspicions are correct it should take but a few minutes to see if the data is still there.

Thanks for the input guys. We're currently working with someone to (hopefully) recover the footage deleted by the Jones County Sheriff's Department.

Right. It's a FAT32 filesystem most likely and an undelete is trivial assuming it's not used further. I know they had someone take a look at the camera but I think they are keeping the results secret for the time being due to a possible case against Jones County.

I would think the deleted footage from the camera can be recovered. There were some files remaining, which means it wasn't initialized, right?
