Announcing the Keene Police Scanner Feed!

Filed under: Announcement, Audio, Copwatch, Police — Ian at 2:41 pm on Sunday, July 26, 2009

Radio TowerFreeKeene.com’s newest service to the community is online. Now you can tune in to our 24/7 scanner feed of the Keene Police Department! It’s always available at Radio.FreeKeene.com or through the “Radio” link in our top menu. It’s not a cheap matter to listen to their digital radio system – an expensive APCO-25 capable scanner is necessary. We’ve spent the money so you don’t have to. Listen via your computer or smartphone anywhere! Plug this URL into your favorite player, or use the quick links below:

Wow… just wow. Is that legal? It seems like a good idea, but I hate to think what the police’s reaction will be, whether you are in the legal right or not.

Now we just need the technology the NSA has to analyze the data without us needing to listen in.

Ben, all sorts of folks have police scanners (the fascination escapes me, but to each his/her own), so I can’t imagine there would be any legal issues in terms of making the feed accessible online.

It’s illegal to carry a scanner in your vehicle unless ‘authorized’ here in the People’s Republic of Michigan.

Streaming a scanner feed is a new one on me. Hats off to you, Ian, this one requires some brass

Great idea, but after waiting for 20 minutes for it to buffer, I gave up.

Ian, why did you go with icecast instead of shoutcast like your other streams? Just curious.

even if you’re a statist you should be able to figure out why listening in on police band is a good idea. Consider it one of those idiotic “civic duties” that you love to push on others.

I suggest AnAmazedReader that you listen in for a while and do your civic duty to report on anything worthwhile. Of course, I’m always told. . .that we have an ‘open and honest government’ ‘by and for the people’

This is a great thing for the Keeniacs. Now people who aren’t even involved can listen in!

You can use a streamripper with winamp and record the feeds You can then post the good parts of those recordings online for other people to hear. :)

This is common, theres nothing wrong w/puting it online.

In fact last week I was hanging out with some of my friends at dunkin donuts, here on Long Island, NY and there was some kind of dispute in the parking lot across the street and the cops showed up. My friend whipped out his iphone and pulled a feed from some one who was syndicated the precints radio… Mind you the dept feed is actually encoded which makes the scanner extra costly…but some one obviously is willing to put it up…

We heard that the dispute was some one accusing some one else of stealing $100 from his car.

But the Popo’s are getting hip to the scanners and are using cell phones for off log chats…

I can lower the delay with Icecast. What you hear is about 10 seconds away from realtime.

Here’s an archived copy of the Department Roster removing the need to point your browser to the government website and thereby having your IP address tracked.
