Nick Ryder Speaks For City Council Seat
An empty City Council seat was left 2 weeks ago by Randy Filiault, who is leaving Keene. A short filing period was opened for the seat, and Free Keene blogger Nick Ryder applied for the seat. I ran for the council in 2009 and did not win. When filling an empty seat, the full council votes on a replacement councilor. Video of the speech and vote is below courtesy of Cheshire TV:
Yes, I know I talked fast. I did not receive any votes; but got a lot of compliments from councilors after the event on my speech.

See: In the system activism is not effective. It’s currently a dead end.
The only thing that will/can change that is out of the system activism.
Nick should be supreme ruler of the entire world.
Screw the council! They’re a bunch of hypocrites and control freaks.
Great try NIck but there’s NO WAY in the World those Power Loving Chickens would ever dare “choose” someone so honest., because you would make those fog headed control Freaks quite uncomfortable with all your “big” ideas..
And they told you they liked your speech but none of chickens would actually vote for you? 100% Genuine Cowards and Two taliking politicians.
With such Dishonsty, How do they look at themselves in the mirror?
Very well done, Nick. The video doesn’t have the other candidates’ speeches so I can’t compare them (not sure I would’ve wanted to hear them anyway), but if I were on the council, your speech would’ve been good enough to get my vote.
And geez, what a rubber-stamp committee, not even a single vote for you. All the more reason the council needs a shake-up. Don’t give up! By running previously, and by appealing for the seat now, you’re building your name-recognition. Success takes time. And by appearing before the council as a well-spoken, reasonable-sounding candidate, you’re starting to build bridges with the other councilors, which will be important when you eventually win the seat, making it easier to perhaps pull some of them over to your side on issues.
Well done sir!
This is effective! Think of it this way, this video has reached more people than the collective works of this city council.
Excellent job Nick!
No way would they willingly appoint someone who would vote against their attempting to undermine the freedom of others.
Good for you Nick. I was itching to see at least one person go against the tide and recognize you. The political process is slow, tedious, and unjust. Its good to see someone show a little patience with it nonetheless.
NICK*ROCKS!…Great job, wish I coulda’ been there in person to see it…Thanks also to CHESHIRE-TV for the video. Here’s some more analysis: The 2 candidates who received votes, “Hayes”, & Dunn, both gave fairly good “speeches”, from what i hear. But this whole exercise was PURE POLITICAL THEATRE. A bullshit production. I’d say the council is split roughly 35% / 65% on these 2 candidates, as the vote tally shows. Let’s look at who voted for the LOSER: Redfern(a weasel in a rats’ costume…), Lane, (a crooked “good-old-boy” pretending to care about anybody who is NOT one of his cronies…), Duffy(fluffy, political seat-warmer, and pushover…)Greenwald(crooked downtown property owner/Real Estate, who can’t even look himself straight in the eye…and who has neo-Nazi Jean Shaheen on speed-dial…),Venezia(Female Greenwald, ditto…), and Jones(decent guy, regular bureaucRAT, nothing too remarkable there…So, it looks like the CROOKED LAWYER and REALTOR brigade is on the ropes, and SLOWLY SINKING!…to mix metaphors…GREAT JOB, NICK! Congratulations…You maybe didn’t get any votes, but, YOU’RE A WINNER IN MY BOOK!…(will I owe you royalties, if I use your real name? The publishers’ lawyers ask me stuff like that…~tKoK.
…And, the LOSER, “Hayes”, was the candidate who *LOST* to Randy Filiault in the most recent City election, which Filiault *WON*…So, yes, even the whole City council won’t do the “voters’ will”…But, in this case, I do agree with the Councils’ wisdom. Dunn will make a great Councilor…the local TEA PARTY can always brew up Mr. Hayes next time…Nothing personal, Hayes, we just like Dunn better, that’s all!…CURAW-HEE!!!….(sp?)…~tKok.
good riddance to filault
the reason u didnt get votes is cuz they are all dopes
you was the best one there
a
I considered your delivery to be impressive and well-spoken – I would like to support your continuing efforts in the future.
However, I’m not sure it was a good idea to advertise an association with “free staters”, especially since you are not one by definition.
“Eloquence (from Latin eloquentia) is fluent,FORCEABLE, (not non-violent) elegant or persuasive speaking in public” ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eloquence ). Nicely done as such, but a bit nervous, as the body language shows.
As you lot claim, you want “freedom” as is stated in the State motto…… There is still the second option.
Wow, Dennis, you really are something else.
People from New Hampshire and people moving to New Hampshire want to *actually* live FREE (as enshrined by the state motto) and you’re so opposed to the idea that you suggest anyone who wants freedom should die?
Good grief.
I did not suggest anyone should die, if not free. I merely gave an option. Your choice, and as the first isn’t going so well…….. be free to make the choice.
Your choice, and as the first isn’t going so well……..
I agree with that.
Logically, would you then agree that “Live Free or Die” is a feel-good motto with no real meaning? (since it isn’t going so well)
I think “live free or die, at least gives a second option, unlike Maine’s “The way life should be”.
Maine’s considered Taxationland.
Why are the free-whatevers ot deluging Maine?
I believe New Hampshire was chosen because it already posessed many of our beliefs. Why would we go to Maine and have to work harder when we can come to New Hampshire? It’s funny that you’re so afraid of us that you need to threaten us.
Luthor, do you seriously think working harder is a bad thing? Hard work’s what true Americans do for as living.
The more you put in, the more you get out of it.
If these people chose NH because it possesses their belief, why would they be here complaining about NH and it’s laws and trying to overthrow the government?
They chose NH because they saw NH as a target with our slogan.
All I can think of is “Chumbawamba” back in the 90′s. Tubthumping ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2H5uWRjFsGc ).
They didn’t succeed in overthrowing the British Government, either.
Brad, indeed I do think it’s a feel-good motto. It gives options, not demands of the government.
I am pretty sure it was not chosen for or by any sort of free state or libertarian movers in. In fact, I believe it dates back to the colonial/ revolutionary days. It was not chosen as a feel-good sort of motto, more of a get up off your ass and do something,or we will be stuck with these Kings forever, either live as free men or die as vassals of the regime! But I may be wrong, it could have come from some PR agency. Look for the original meaning in the context of the time it was said, rather than compare it to todays tragedies, like parking tickets and speed limits. —bil (Apologies to King of Keene,no relation to the Kings refered to above)
BIL says: “I believe it dates back to the colonial/ revolutionary days. ”
Back in the days you speak of Free Keene did not exist. It’s a new cult.
From wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_free_or_die ) :”Live Free or Die” is the official motto of the U.S. state of New Hampshire, adopted by the state in 1945. It is possibly the best-known of all state mottos, partly because it speaks to an assertive independence historically found in American political philosophy and partly because of its contrast to the milder sentiments found in other state mottos.
The phrase comes from a toast written by General John Stark on July 31, 1809. Poor health forced Stark, New Hampshire’s most famous soldier of the American Revolutionary War, to decline an invitation to an anniversary reunion of the Battle of Bennington. Instead, he sent his toast by letter:
Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils.
The motto was enacted at the same time as the state emblem, on which it appears.
“It was not chosen as a feel-good sort of motto, more of a get up off your ass and do something,or we will be stuck with these Kings forever, either live as free men or die as vassals of the regime”
I take it you listen to rush alot, “regime” word noted.
Now, considering we were trying to get AWAY from the king’s rule, do you think the KING of Keene, should be avoided?
I feel good that I can do as I please, and not TAUNT anyone, such as the free lot does to the police and city council.
I think IF they want to make this unanimous They should have their drinking games at the fire station as well.
Fire dept’s also government.
But they are cowards, as Ian admitted repeatedly on earlier posts.
Nick Ryder? I’ve seen that name on xtube.
Dennis-actually,i do sometimes listen to Rush. How do you learn what he is saying otherwise? Hearsay? I make a point of listening to as many viewpoints as I can.I rarely listen to those that are closest to my own view.I would rather learn what the opposition was doing and saying. Now back on course. I know Rush has coined a lot of new ‘words’, I was unaware that ‘regime’ was one of them.I believe it actually even predates radio as we know it. The use of the word hardly implies my Limboesque tendencies. It you look at the context, you will see it actually refers to a previous regime, implied to in the motto.
As to the Wiki quote, nice work. It is a rephrase of my original post.
Keenes own King is self proclaimed, and his subjects are voluntary. Much like Emperor Norton of San Francisco fame, his fame results from his personality.
The Fire Dept. drinking game sounds like fun, they have some neat stuff to play with there. Lets not leave the Highway guys out, either.I am sure they could use a nice cold beer after a day out on the roads, maybe some brandy after a snowstorm. Good idea! Thanks. —bil
i don’t think the “state motto”
is good
“live free or die”
aaaaaaaa….i dunno…its dumb
number ONE
one doesn’t DIE if they aren’t LIVING FREE
OBLIVIOUSLY
so its stating something a 1 year old knows ALREADY
so that makes it condescending and incorrect
then
there’s the part that’s more philosophical
like meaning
“live free or part of your SPIRIT DIES”
Which i dont want mottowise either
so..generaly speaking
i dont like it
its dumb
plus it try’s to be too smartypantsy
it doesn’t suit ME i know that
anywho………..i bye
In a way its just saying LIVE FREE
Because the second part is dumb
so
I guess i have boiled it down to if it just said “live free”
it would be 1000000000000000000 times better
peace ![]()
imho
I think Dennis spends too much time on “x-tube”
seein as he has the actors names down
i mean………
Yeah,I wasn’t going to say anything,but…..
I agree, the motto does seem a little weird, I mean, like, how do you live FREE??
There’s always the rent and food, except when ya can scoff some off the parents.
And whats with them, its not like they ever sit on this old couch, I mean, it’s in the BASEMENT, for christs sake! Sheesh! I gave them a five for the ‘net last month, and I DID go to that place about the job,but it was already taken, so what is all this live free crap, anyway?? And you are gonna die someday, right?? So why bum people out by putting it on signs all over?? Peace out!! —bil
Good job, Nick
And don’t bash the motto… it’s part of what makes New Hampshire so awesome
Um
ok
