There were a few anarchists in the town where I grew up, and a lot more in the city nearby. But perhaps because these individuals were not as organized as Keeniacs, the activism in which I participated seemed to live or die with my action.

I could get a few of my friends together and shout from a megaphone and sign-wave in Rittenhouse Park. We would go “Robin-Hooding,” where individuals feed parking meters for strangers in an attempt to “cost” the State the “revenue” of the ticket. But even in a city of 1.5 million, there were only a handful of us doing activism on a regular basis. “What’s the deal?” I wondered.

At the same time, I was seeing videos and blogs produced on a regular basis of all sorts of interesting activism going on in New Hampshire, especially Keene. One of those videographers is Garret Ian of FreeConcord.org. In fact, it is he who was the inspiration behind this blog post.

I missed Garret’s Chalking trial today. I felt terrible about it because I wanted to be there to support an awesome activist and a great guy. I later tuned in to FreeTalkLive only to hear the hosts talking about the trial, and I suddenly felt much better about today. I was relieved knowing that while my presence would have been useful and appreciated, there are so many activists here that my absence was barely felt.

When one is among a small group of liberty-lovers, activism can live and die with one’s actions. While it’s awesome as an individual to have such a disproportionate impact of activism in the community, it can burn a person out.

The Shire is going to do activism with or without you. If you live in a place that only does activism when you do, why not move to the Shire? That way, you can add your efforts to an already humming machine — a place where you can take a break once in a while and the machine will keep running.

I’ve only been here 7 months. There are people who have been here for years. I know the Shire hasn’t always been this way and I think it’s completely awesome and mystifying that through the continued efforts of those individuals, this harbor for activism is possible. Thanks to those of you who paved the way. If you haven’t moved here yet, what are you waiting for?

Every time I’ve recently heard someone complain about “Free Staters” I’ve been hearing about how the dreaded “Free Staters” want to “force” their views on people. I’m not a Free Stater, but I’d be proud to call myself one. For the sake of argument, lets pretend that I am .

I am now a Free Stater. *click*

You there! Reading the FreeKeene.com blog and hating every syllable. I want you to be left alone to live your life how you see fit so long as you don’t harm anyone. You disagree? Tough crap! I’m going to force you to be left alone!! By leaving you alone!! Theres nothing you can do to stop me…..!

Ha ha ha ha ha!

This whole forcing liberty thing is apparently an epidemic. I’m debating it with a guy on the usacarry.com forums in this thread here. I’m far from the best debater on the planet, so feel free to back me up if you see fit.

In the spirit of the summary execution of an unarmed man, CNN has an article today discussing how al Qaeda makes the money it uses to perpetrate violent attacks against the innocent: Drug trafficking, kidnapping fund al Qaeda. I wonder how much money al Qaeda is making off bootlegging liquor these days.

I often wonder how many times people like me need to point these things out before detractors finally realize that what we’re talking about has some substance to it.

Drug prohibition causes crime. Drug prohibition funds violent criminal enterprise. Drug prohibition does the opposite of addressing the problems of drug abuse.

Shouldn’t be long now before I have some fresh stories from across New Hampshire of needless victimization fueled by the insane drug war.

On 01/23/11 when Seth Gagne passed a note to a pharmacist in Rochester, NH, his intentions were made quite clear:

“Police say he passed a note to a pharmacist saying that if the pharmacist “pushed the button and did not return, (the pharmacist) would die.””

Luckily, this pharmacist didn’t get seriously injured or die. Mark my words though, one day in the near future I will be writing about one who does. I’ll even be linking back to this blog where I predicted it would happen. This pending criminal activity could be easily prevented if a rational approach to drug abuse were adopted. From my experience in law enforcement, the majority of crimes such as these are a direct result of drug prohibition.

I once saw a guy rob his parents blind so that he could get money at a pawn shop to buy heroin. I’ve chased a heroin addict through the woods as he carried a backpack full of stolen items that he collected from pilfering an entire neighborhood of cars while the owners slept. These crimes could easily be prevented.

If the police really wanted to make communities in New Hampshire safer, they would advocate for an end to drug prohibition. Ending drug prohibition would mean that drug addiction (a serious social problem) could be treated as it should be: a medical issue.

Were drug addiction treated as a medical issue people would not have to resort to violent or property crime to get their fix. Their addictions could be treated and diminished so that they could return to being a functioning member of society.

What would you honestly rather have: people using drugs in a controlled setting where the ultimate goal would be their getting drug-free OR pharmacists being murdered over pills? Do you really think Seth Gagne or his cohorts would have resorted committing a violent crime and risk imprisonment to get money for drugs when they had a perfectly legal and safe alternative?

One day drug prohibition will end in this state and country. It will end not because all drug use is a positive thing, it will end because the prohibition is far worse.

When it does end and the violent crime, addiction, and disease rates plummet, you can remember all the government officials who fought tooth-and-nail to prevent it.

Either through action or inaction, they’re the ones to blame for this continued insanity.

The Fosters Daily Democrat article about this case is here.

The joke is on you if you still think the “justice” system actually renders any. Case in point: Eight activists were charged with misdemeanor trespassing at the county jail earlier this year. (That one can “trespass” on property that is open to the public is another ludicrous issue, but I digress.) All eight activists were arrested together, so the circumstances of the cases were identical. The activists’ trials were broken up over multiple months. First, in August, was Jim Johnson. Jim was convicted of misdemeanor trespass and is currently appealing to a jury trial. Then, in September, was a multi-defendant trial involving yours truly, Lauren Canario, and fellow Free Keene bloggers Sean Murphy and Dale Everett. In this trial, the same man in the robe, Edward Burke, admitted that we couldn’t be found guilty of misdemeanor trespass, meaning it was not proven that it had been adequately communicated to us that we needed to leave. However, he convicted us all of violation-level trespass. Of course, this wasn’t what we were charged with at the start of the trial and unlike the misdemeanor charge, the requirements for conviction of this charge revolve around the defendant supposedly knowing he or she was not supposed to be in the place in question. Of course, we thought we could be there, as we’d been to the old jail countless times doing the exact same thing and had never been told to leave. However, we were not allowed to ask questions that would have been relevant to such a defense, because at the time of the trial it was still a misdemeanor, so the robed man ruled against those questions, saying they weren’t relevant to whether or not we were told to leave and didn’t, which is what needed to be proven by the state gang for a misdemeanor conviction.

If that wasn’t inconsistent and arbitrary enough for you, we come to the trial of Menno Troyer, who was quietly found NOT GUILTY of violation trespass a few days after his trial! (A different robed man, Runyon from Jaffrey, was sitting in for Burke.) Two trespass trials remain and are scheduled for late February. It remains to be seen if the state will press forward or just drop the charges.

Because they convicted me of a violation, I’m essentially locked out of an appeal, because the supreme court demands a $180 filing fee or the filling out of a detailed two-page affidavit detailing my personal finances. I refuse to pay this scam-system and I sure as hell am not going to give them my private financial info. But wait, you say! You have read the NH constitution and you know about Article 14 of the Bill of Rights, which says:

Every subject of this state is entitled to a certain remedy, by having recourse to the laws, for all injuries he may receive in his person, property, or character; to obtain right and justice freely, without being obliged to purchase it; completely, and without any denial; promptly, and without delay; conformably to the laws.

Sounds pretty clear, right? Us “subjects” are “entitled” to free justice without obligation to purchase or denial. Well, remember, in Legal Land, it’s not your interpretation that matters. I recently tried to appeal a decision in another matter to the supreme court without the filing fee or affidavit, and they kicked it back in my face, essentially claiming that Article 14 doesn’t prohibit filing fees, but instead only prohibits bribery. So, either you pay up or open up your books if you want a chance at justice in New Hampshire. Of course doing those things only gives you a chance – odds are good they will find in favor of the state, of course.

Government “justice” is a cruel joke and to paraphrase Marc Stevens’ Adventures in Legal Land, nothing more than window dressing for institutionalized violence.

In one of the most famous episodes of the original Star Trek series, The Trouble with Tribbles written by David Gerrold, much of the crew is convinced to buy these adorable little cooing furballs known as tribbles. A crafty salesman manages to unload quite a few of these before the crew realizes that they reproduce faster than Mormon bunnies overdosing on Viagra. Would he have managed to sell so many had the customers known they could make many more of their own by just over-feeding them a bit?

The trouble with selling tribbles is they just aren’t a scarce commodity. It’s built into their nature. The shifty Star Trek character wasn’t just selling tribbles. Every tribble he sold was also a tribble factory!

You know…. as I read all the insults and hatred that is directed at both myself and fellow Free Keene contributors, I can’t help but think the vast majority of you making these rude remarks haven’t the slightest clue as to what exactly this blog is about. I think this because I’m fairly sure that if people really knew the logic behind things here that we would be supported, joined, and encouraged.

I think this because at one time I vehemently disagreed with Ian Freeman’s (the owner of this website) view of how a society can function without institutionalized violence. Not only do I now agree with him, I volunteer to help him by writing for his blog.

I am a native New Hampshire-ite. I am also a former NH law enforcement officer with eleven years of service.

Why am I here?

Why did I quit a decent paying job and walk away from an excellent retirement plan that people in the private sector could only dream of?

Why do I voluntarily subject myself to the vitriolic comments which this and my previous blogs attract?

Why did a girl who grew up in the Keene community decide to voluntarily swan dive her reputation in a similar fashion?

It’s simple. Our slowly increasing numbers don’t think violence is an appropriate solution to solving non-violent problems…. and we have the gonads to say it.

Every ordinance (no matter how trivial) that the Keene City Council enacts is a threat of violence or violence itself as a solution to a largely non-violent problem.

The alcohol ordinance is the hot topic. You think that people peacefully drinking alcohol in public is a problem? Okay, solve the problem without authorizing, threatening, and using violence and I guarantee you the Free-Keene-movement-minded people (like me, Heika, Ian, and Sam) will shut up about it.

The current non-violent “problem” of open alcohol containers is currently “fixed” by a police baton, a can of pepper spray, a taser, a cage, and ultimately a gun. Don’t you get it? I’ll tell you stories about how I turned to “legal” violence against people who did non-violent things if it better helps you understand.

We’re loud, persistent, and to some of you annoying BECAUSE we are hell bent on eliminating institutionalized violence as a solution to solving peaceful problems. It is amazing that being opposed to the **initiation** of violence is such a controversial position to take.

Is violence REALLY such a good thing that people who don’t want it to be socially acceptable deserve to be insulted, attacked, and opposed?

Do you believe that violence should be used to solve non-violent problems? I would have answered “NO!” seven years ago as I pushed around a Crown Victoria. My answer would have been “NO!” because I didn’t know any better. Once I knew better… I had to quit. I never want to be violent to the non-violent. But I was… 40+ hours a week.

Imagine how differently history would read if violence were never an acceptable solution to solving non-violent problems.

Imagine how different and peaceful the future could be if violence stops being an acceptable solution to solving non-violent problems.

The Earth doesn’t have to stay flat.

Par for the course around here: Advocate a society without institutionalized violence against peaceful people = get toasted in the comment section
