Rick has for years been speaking out against the insane “War on Drugs”, which is really just a war on our friends and family. Here’s his recent appearance as part of the Beyond Bars “Safekeepers” campaign, where he explains his path to finding compassion for the people he is tasked with keeping in a cage, many of whom don’t belong in jail, but are forced there by an inhumane system. Van Wickler brings a level of humanity to an operation where it’s normally hard to find. I really appreciate that we have him running the Cheshire jail, rather than some sadist, as is frequently the case in other “Departments of Correction”:

It’s about time people started promoting this issue. Thanks to Neal Connor and the activists behind the Foundation for New Hampshire Independence, a brand new group created to advocate for NH secession. Ben Leubsdorf at the Concord Monitor reports:
Comparing the United States to the Roman Empire in decline, five New Hampshire residents have established a nonprofit group to advocate for the Granite State’s secession and independence.
“This nation has grown too large to be represented by a few people, a few bureaucrats, in Washington. . . . New Hampshire is a small state, and we here in New Hampshire can take care of our own,” said Neal Conner, a technology consultant from Manchester and treasurer of the Foundation for New Hampshire Independence.
The foundation was established as a nonprofit corporation Sept. 14, with an office in Manchester and the goal of educating residents “on the benefits of the state of New Hampshire peacefully declaring its independence and separating from the United States,” according to a filing with the secretary of state’s office. Activists have stepped up and contributed dozens of books – enough to more than fill a large tote – to this year’s book drive for the Cheshire jail, aka the Keene Spiritual Retreat. The books were dropped off this afternoon.
Recently I surprise-hosted a brief episode of AVTM LIVE! when the AVTM Studios were visited by the local Zoning Enforcers. They alleged that a party complained about excessive occupancy, and that they were seeking consent to enter and “inspect” the house.
