Day 11, 5/17/12 – Derrick J from Jail

May 17 2012 Day 11
I was awoken to be a “cart runner” today. No biggie, but I hate the airport style groping that comes with it. After coming back from delivering breakfast and seeing “Mr. Hall” snap on some latex gloves, I said “Thank you for flying Delta Airlines.” He laughed, then touched me all over my body. During lunch, I asked Scott in the kitchen why the car runners no longer bring back 2 trays with them so that they can hanve hot meals. He said that one of the cart runners who came after Ian “ruined it for everyone”. (more…)

Day 10, 5/16/12 – Derrick J from Jail

5/16/12 Day 10
Wooo! What an eventful day! Woken-up early to be a “cart-runner”, then out to booking where I got changed and chatted with Mr. Deturis (the good one_, who didn’t even naked-check me. He mentioned how he saw Beau come in and how nice Beau was – how he had told him he was set-up. Then the fat, friendly sheriff shackled me and was sure to loosen the cuffs to where he could fit one of his fat fingers between the cuffs and my hands. While waiting to be transported, I met Julie Selona, who says she was wrongfully arrested and charged with a felony (more…)

“Authoritarians Use Threats” – Derrick J from Jail

Subject: Authoritarians Use Threats

I was just threatened. Not just me. Everyone in cell block R. At 10:00pm, after head count, everyone was asked to convene downstairs for an important message. I wasn’t sure what this could be about, but I could sense tension in the room from the way the jailers were standing with their hands on their hips. The biggest jailer in the facility was pacing, poised and ready to address the crowd.

“Any of you know (I forget the name)?” He paused to look around the room.

“Silk?,” one inmate responded?

“Yes, Silk. Some of you may know him. He’s out now. There is a female employee, who, whenever she walks into this cell block, hears whispers of, “Silk, Silk”. It’s harassment, plain and simple. (more…)

“Circling the Drain or Springtime for Humanity?” – Derrick J from Jail

Subject: Circling the Drain or Springtime for Humanity?

Today was one of the best episodes of Free Keene TV yet. If you haven’t seen it yet, watch it now. On top of it, the episode was followed by a visit from JJ Schlessinger (Thursday night Free Talk Live cohost, FreeKeene.com blogger, and Free Keene TV producer) and Anarcho-Ali Havens (Friday night Free Talk Live cohost, LadiesInKeene.com blogger, and regular anchor for Free Keene TV). Their visit really helped buoy my spirits on what has been a very up and down day for me. (more…)

“Oppression, the New Mundane” – Derrick J from Jail

Subject: Oppression, the New Mundane

When I first came to this jail, I was a fish out of water. I was stunned by the jailer’s ever present blank stares as they performed their jobs like automatons. In a voluntary community, giving commands to another human being, putting one’s hands on a stranger, and subjecting one to a needle without consent is foreign, to say the least. That’s not how my community operates. The people with whom I chose to surround myself operate on a strictly voluntary basis ¨C nothing is done except with explicit consent. (more…)

“My Supporters Make Me Smile” – Derrick J from Jail

Subject: My Supporters Make Me Smile

Yeah, it’s 80 degrees and sunny, not a cloud in the sky this Memorial Day. Yeah, I would like to be outside, soaking in the majestic glory of life on Earth. I’m having some trouble getting to that place of ecstasy while I sit here in this cage, alone, surrounded by heavy clanging doors, fluorescent lighting, and blank concrete walls.

But then I remember to count my blessings, not least of which are my loving and caring supporters (more…)
