Subject: Memorial Day in Jail, What I Am Thankful For

“It is vital that young people, the guardians of our future, develop a strong awareness of the futility of violence and war. They can learn from the examples of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. that non-violence is the best way to ensure peace in the long term. Because the 20th century was a century of violence, let us make the 21st a century of dialogue.” -Dalai Lama

As I sit in my jail, cell, locked up in a cage built for a human, I am listening to the radio and am bombarded by voices telling me to “take time to thank a veteran for the freedom I have”. (more…)

Day 22

Subject: Window Pain

There are two windows in my cell. One is three feet long and five inches wide, and it is on the door, looking out at the rest of cell block R. The other is four feet tall and one and a half feet wide, is divided by two large metal bars, and it faces a red brick wall about ten feet away. If you get close to it and look straight up, you can see a few inches of sky and watch the clouds pass overhead. Look left, look right, nothing but brick wall. (more…)

Subject: I Get To See My Friends

Wow. You think you know a person. So I’m reading in my room when I hear my door open. I look up, and it’s the Tough Guy off the block, Mr. Jersey Shore. Always working out, calling people “bad”, and once threatened Beau.

“Ey, Bud,” he says as I turn from my book, “They’re out there waving to you. They’re all out there.”

“Really?”

“Yeah!” He gestures with his head for me to follow him. “Come take a look.” (more…)

Subject: When I Spilled 16 Trays

Today I was a cart runner with Beau. As normal. Breakfast, we delivered eggs, cheese, and bagels. At lunch, we delivered mixed vegetables, garlic bread, “american chop-suey” and strawberry rice crispy treats. All made with love, to be sure.

While delivering trays and turning the cart into the doorway of D-Pool, I misguided the momentum needed to slide the cart smoothly into the doorway while I directed it. While turning, it slammed into the jam of the door, causing a mountain of vegetables and chop-suey to rain down upon me (more…)

Subject: These Jail Guards Are Awesome

No joke ¨I sincerely mean it. I am on day 21 of the Derrick J incarceration count-up, and I will tell you honestly that the men and women who work as guards in the Cheshire County House of Corrections are friendly, professional, honest and helpful. Kudos to the person in charge of hiring!

By now, I’ve met every guard who works here. Each greets me with a smile, treats me with respect, and speaks to me like a fellow human being. It is remarkable, and I would be remiss if I would give all but two guards no less than an “A” rating. (more…)

Subject: Dancing in My Cell

Attitude is EVERYTHING. Pick up a good one! It’s 1am. For the last two hours, I’ve been dancing around my cell, listening to the radio. For the third night in a row.

For those of you who pity my situation, STOP! And start getting half as excited as I am. There is so much for which to be thankful. For example, all of the activism that is happening in Keene! (more…)
