This is an email between myself and one of the Keene, NH city councilors, Cynthia Georgina, who runs a local radio show on Saturday mornings called Talkback. It’s an interesting look into the reality of so many who believe in government, and the misunderstandings that keep them from embracing the principles of liberty. I recently shared one of my favorite movies, and this story is the discussion that resulted.

First off, Sam, thanks for “Pleasantville”. We finally watched it Friday night. . . .As I said, I’ll donate the DVD to the Keene Public Library so many other people can enjoy it if you don’t want it back. Anyway, we both enjoyed the film. I’m sure there’s some relevance to the Free State movement, and I really didn’t “get” that. But it was enjoyable!
Pleasantville is a story about change and how people choose to respond to change. The parallels to the FSP for me are numerous. Let’s explore the movie a bit and see if I can point out a few observations and correlations for you:
Have you ever tried to describe color to someone who only knows black and white? What method would you use to explain red to someone who only knows shades of light and dark?(more…)
The courageous Andrew Carroll announced earlier this week that he will be possessing marijuana in Downtown Keene this January 10th. Here is the Ridley Report‘s interview with Andrew:
Liberty activists called WKBK’s Talkback today and discussed food vending permits, noise ordinances, “the law”, and liberty activists and the “community”. One of today’s statist authoritarian callers suggested that free staters are “intrusive” and “coming from the outside and dictating”. Listen as Cynthia and Kendall completely change their tune when FreeKeene’s Ian calls in. Politicians, as always want everyone to like them.
The unfortunate fact is, the authoritarians are still the bulk of call load on this show. We could really use your help! Please join us in calling the program with a pro-liberty viewpoint. Get details and discuss on this Free Keene forum thread.
The City of Keene actually put dollar signs on their property tax bill this time around! Since they never answered any of my questions I included with my check last property tax time, this time I drew my own conclusions and invited their rebuttal. I stapled the check to the following document indicating on both the document and the check that their depositing of the check would constitute their agreement with my assertions. Now, obviously I understand that they are just going to use violence on me anyway as was recently proven in the “freedom couch” situation. I don’t believe these are magic words that will save me from their violence or anything, it’s just fun to give these bureaucrats something to think about. I think my next step will be to contact the state attorney genital, record the phone call, and ask some questions about the “consent of the governed”. So, in case you’re interested in what I wrote to the violent monopoly called government, here are the contents of my “NOTICE OF NONCONSENT AND AFFIDAVIT OF TRUTH” (.PDF): (more…)
Liberty activists called WKBK’s Talkback on Saturday and discussed public transportation, the Free State Project, drug decriminalization, government, and corruption. That set off the statist authoritarians who proceeded to dominate the entire third hour. I have included their calls in this archive in hopes they will inspire you to call the show next week:

I forgive you. You probably never realized, perhaps until now, that government hurts people. I do not know you, but from listening to what you’ve said on the radio and reading about you on the Internet, I imagine that like many people, you believe that government is a handy tool you can use to make life better for people. While your intentions may be pure, the method is not. Government is force. Were you oblivious to that fact? After all, you are one of the people calling themselves part of the “City of Keene”, so whether you knew or not, that’s the tool you advocate. I’m guessing you didn’t know, as you did say on 08/09/08’s “Talkback”:
“I wouldn’t advise aggressing against anybody.”
I really appreciated when you said that! I think people working together voluntarily is a great thing. However, threatening people with violence is not a nice way to build a community with mutual respect. Based on your statement on Talkback, I thought you understood that. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it was you who snitched me out to the “code enforcers” over my tenants’ couch. You said you wouldn’t advise aggressing against your neighbor, then the very same week you initiated aggression against me! (more…)
