“Free Staters are the single biggest threat the state is facing today.” – State Rep Cynthia Chase

District 8 State Representative Cynthia Chase of Keene has made her position clear on liberty-loving activists moving here, and it’s quite the endorsement of the success of the Free State Project. In a post to Blue Hampshire, she reveals that she believes Free Staters are the biggest threat to the state (something to be proud of) and that she and some others on Central Square during the peace vigil attempted to scare away a visiting couple from moving here. (As an aside, what was Ms. Chase doing at the peace vigil? She must be very confused about what peace is. Hint- it doesn’t include using aggressive force on people via “the state”.)

Here’s her comment from Blue Hampshire:

In the opinion of this Democrat, Free Staters are the single biggest threat the state is facing today. There is, legally, nothing we can do to prevent them from moving here to take over the state, which is their openly stated goal. In this country you can move anywhere you choose and they have that same right. What we can do is to make the environment here so unwelcoming that some will choose not to come, and some may actually leave. One way is to pass measures that will restrict the “freedoms” that they think they will find here. Another is to shine the bright light of publicity on who they are and why they are coming. They can not put their ideology into our statutes unless we elect them in great enough numbers to take over our General Court. We have already seen them try during the last session of the General Court. Our last election was a repudiation of their extremism.

Here in Keene we had a couple show up on Central Square to take part in our weekly Saturday morning peace demonstration. In the course of the conversation they allowed that they were Free Staters considering moving to Keene. The folks on the Square told them in no uncertain terms not to do that because Free Staters are not welcome here. Cheshire County is a welcoming community but not to those whose stated goal is to move in enough ideologues to steal our state, and our way of life.

Ultimately the Free Staters want NH to be a platform state for them to export their views to the rest of the country. Some of these folks dress up pretty well, but if you check their website you will find that they are really wolves in sheep’s clothing. The best strategy from my perspective is to keep shining a light on their views and activities and make it very plain that NH is not up for sale to any ideology. To ignore these people and hope they go away is a recipe for disaster.

    • She is welcome to move back to RI. It is near the least free state in he US.

  3. She essentially is saying that restricting government coercion is a horrible thing.

    Reply
    • But she would deny that government is coercive. She would claim that government is voluntary for most, and the few who resist are anti-social, uncivilized malcontents who should be eliminated. The inherent contradiction of her position is ignored by here statist supporters.

  4. It would appear that “peace” to this person is a different concept than I have. I’ve long though that the anti-war movement spawned in the VietNam era was “astroturf”. Interesting how Kennedy / Johnson war become Mister Nixon’s war with vast explosion in crowds. At the time, everyone swoare it was about “peace”. In actuallity, it was an astroturf for the D’s to attack the R’s. Now it seems that both the D’s and the R’s are very content to have perpetual war. And, perpetual welfare. Sad. Ron Paul was the ONLY “peace” candidate and was ridiculed for it. Argh!

    • Ridiculed? There were over 20 Republican candidates in NH and Ron Paul won over a 1/4 of them including 8 towns to Romneys 13 in Cheshire County. http://freestateproject.org/intro/ron_paul

    • MA? I thought she was from RI? She likely doesn’t like people from MA since those people tend to move to NH for similar reasons as free staters.

    • Indeed. When did she actually move to NH?

  7. Flood that place and make sure the likes of her can’t breathe, that is what they are calling for. Flood the whole state.

  8. She should introduce a bill to change the state motto from “live free or die” to just “die”.

    Reply
    • That’s “die” after you are forced to allow socialists to seize and consume all your assets in the service of advancing socialism.

    • You assume politicians are truthful. A truthful state motto: Live For Your Rulers, or Die.

A no state (anarchist) motto: Live Free by Killing Those Who Enslave.

  9. As long as NH is unable to remove the despotic influences, it will never be a free state. Her comments need to be noted for perpetuity so that she can be removed at the next available opportunity.

Dear Ms.Chase, I was born and raised in N.H. and at age 4 would climb onto my grandparents Pinto when the horse would lower itself to the ground on all four knee’s her name was Sara, and to pass judgement onto another that you haven’t taken the time to know personally would suggest you pass judgement, exactly what a wolf would do dressed in sheeps clothing or one that casts stones yet is full of sin.
Spend time and go out for coffee, get to know them. And hopefully you can learn that a book isn’t always judged by a cover. At times the best looking books on the outside are the horror that causes things like what happened in Conn, . Read about what the side effect of pysch meds. do to children, and it can and does cause permanent damage leading to aggression, violence and suicide and death to others, big pharma is reaping profits off damage to others.

  13. How does someone with her views on Freedom get elected in a State like New Hampshire? Hopefully after publicly stating that the solution is to “pass measures that restrict freedoms”, she won’t have to worry about being reelected.

    • She lives in Keene. I don’t think a Republican has been a state rep in Keene in a decade. 2 of the 5 most Democratic districts in NH are in Keene.

  14. Wow, I am moving from PA to NH because it already has the reputation of being the “freeest state in the nation”. That means less government intrusion into the private lives of its citizens. As a state representative, I presume she was part of the process that achieved that remarkable designation. If not, and if she prefers to embrace bigger government telling people what to do with their lives, their property, and the fruits of their labor, perhaps she should move. When a state has as its motto, “Live Free or Die,” I presume that its citizens embrace liberty, freedom, and the Constitution and would welcome like-minded individuals.

  17. Cynthia Chase seems to be confused about the same thing as Aaron Gill who was interviewed for the second NewHampshire.com column on the Free State Project:

    http://freekeene.com/2012/12/20/its-really-disturbing-to-think-about-what-20000-of-them-could-do-to-new-hampshire/

Gill says that he just wants to be left alone and doesn’t want to be told what to do and claims that Free Staters are preventing that by moving in “from other places trying to tell New Hampshire what to do.”

Chase also claims that Free Staters are “moving here to take over the state.”

Both Chase and Gill don’t seem to understand that the New Hampshire government is controlling peoples’ lives and refusing to leave them alone. Both Chase and Gill support having the government do this and apparently believe that they have the right to control peoples’ lives through the government.

It is likely because they believe that they have the right to control people’s lives in this manner that they erroenously see the Free Staters’ attempts to prevent the government from aggressively controlling people’s lives as as essentially an invasion of NH rather than a freeing of NH.

When Chase says “steal our state, and our way of life” in the above article she is trying to make efforts to free people from the tyranny of the state seem like bad things. Free Staters are only “stealing” the way of life of those whose way of life is to unjustly and parasitically live off others by means of extortion and other forms of aggressive coercion using the government.

  18. Not up for sale for anything but YOUR ideology, Cynthia. It is completely adorable the way you somehow relate everything on Talkback to the fact that you had children and they didn’t do X or you raised them to be Y or are in denial that they enjoy doing Z. The fact that you prefaced your abominable declaration of intent to – and I quote – ” restrict the “freedoms” that they think they will find here” by pointing out that you are a Democrat shows what a devoted and soulless idealogue YOU are. YOU would sell out native New Hampshirites and “freedoms” men have fought and died to preserve. Or do you suppose the statue of John Stark on the House lawn is just a decoration? You are a pathetic, sycophantic shill, and people like YOU are the reason this country is becoming a cesspool of whining, entitled, terrified eternal children. This nation’s death is on your hands Cynthia. Yours.

    Hi Cynthia,

I had the pleasure of reading an article about your thoughts on the Free State Project. I’m glad you’re outspoken and hope to one day meet you when I move to NH :)

I can imagine how threatening our movement must be. I’d probably feel similar if some movement was trying to take over the state I lived in. The only thing I can say in an attempt to comfort you is that we’re coming to create Freedom and Liberty, nothing more.

We’re coming to do what our founding fathers believed in. If you doubt this – then please engage us. We’re an outspoken bunch as well.

So they want to move to NH to “platform their views.” Last time I checked, companies like GE, Exxon, and Lockheed Martin pay people called lobbyist to argue for or against specific legislation in Washington D.C.

  32. Just read this on Tom Woods website. She is the liberal statist version of a neocon. Just as they want to keep brown-skinned people out of the US, she wants to keep Free Staters from moving in on her turf. Live Free of Die? I think that that slogan is sooo outmoded.

  33. “… shining a light …” is the last thing a statist can survive. Ideologies are bought and sold through intelligent discourse. Statists survive by appeal to irrational emotions, circumventing reason. The same may be said of the sophists, i.e., pseudo philosophers. I invite Cynthia to “bring it on”.
