In a recent episode of Freedom Watch, Judge Napolitano talks to Lynn Chong, former chair of the Belknap (NH) County Democrats. Frustrated with Obama’s foreign policy, she changed her voter registration from Democrat to independent udeclared and will vote for Ron Paul.
(Bet you won’t see this on Blue Hampshire.)
[Update: Jay, in the comments, recommends BlueRepublican.org. It’s an interesting site.
A related article in The Laconia Daily Sun provides more info:
“I would definitely call myself a progressive,” said Will Hopkins of Belmont [NH], who returned from a tour as infantryman in Iraq to become executive director of New Hampshire Peace Action, a group seeking to end foreign wars and cut defense budgets. “I supported Obama in 2008, but I’m supporting Ron Paul. That’s where I’m putting my eggs this year,” he said. “A lot of folks in the peace movement are taking a close look at Paul.”]
I see it as more opposition to the wars/invasions than a full-blown paradigm shift. I get the feeling that despite RP's self-proclaimed anti-war stance, a lot of his economic policies would set the conditions for more war in the future (i.e. furthering US imperialist policies in Africa in order to grab the gold after the gold standard is brought back).
One time when I was at OccupyWallSt, I was talking with an anarchist comrade who suggested we all vote for Ron Paul in order to bring capitalism's inevitable collapse quicker. I laughed.
In the world Julia's brain lives in, it is possible that not only will Ron Paul get elected President, put the U.S. back on the gold standard, go to war in Africa – all after first auditing then eliminating the Fed, *SHIT* – Julia, if Ron Paul had *THAT*KIND* of
**SUPER*POWERS*, he'd be the fucking president *NOW*……
You're fucking tripping, Julia, and your opposition to Ron Paul makes me want to support him all the more…
🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

It is bigger than you think.
No other candidate in the race motivates independents and young people like Ron Paul. No other Republican can capture so large a portion of the voters abandoned by pro-war Obama.

Thanks, Jay.
The reason many democrats are now leaning towards Ron Paul is because the most important cleavage in politics today is not left versus right, but libertarian versus communitarian.
It would seem to me that Gary Johnson would be a more palatable choice for a Democrat than Ron Paul…unless pragmatism in this election is trumping ideology…in which case, why switch at all?
Tully, I think the idea here is that these "Blue Republicans" just want to see their positions addressed. I.E. end the wars and occupations. Ron Paul has enough support that he can make a play for the nomination. If he gets it, he could actually take on Obama. Thus, that is a path to seeing the wars end. Supporting Gary Johnson would be symbolic only. That's not what these people are looking for. They want results.
A long time friend, who was definitely of the progressive variety, say he wants to vote for Ron Paul.
In some ways folks on the left are more easily reformed than folks on the right. When lefties get older, they start to feel the pinch of taxes, they start to own guns etc. If they are shown the coercive nature of the beliefs they have been sold they often are easier to repent than "law and order" right wingers.
Unforunately, the deadline to switch parties has long since passed in NH. However, maybe someone from outside NH will see this story. Either way, it is helpful to document this phenomena and learn the reasons behind it.
Sorry, "Keith", but that "deadline" you speak of, is largely an illusion….When *ALL* NH voters go to the polls in Jan., they can choose either the blue or pink ballot, and vote for who ever they want to…
Ron Paul will most likely win both the pink & blue ballots!

the word *facepalm* was invented for exactly the stuff people like Julia say.the gold standard is not based on the amount of gold one can mine in africa.somehow does your soft heart come with a soft head too? seems like it. first of all,ron paul wants to allow currency competition.so that people who dont like the Fed resrve notes can mint their own money -let competition decide which currency is best.the one that loses 97% of its worth or the one that remains steady.currently this competition is banned by legal tender laws. the prediction of history is that gold will… Read more »
Julia, it's not the capitalist system that would collapse under Ron Paul. There is no capitalism in America. It's the corporatist system and the banking cartel that would collapse, and that would be a good thing.
Ron Paul 2012.
Looking forward to vote Ron Paul in 2012!

I live in Iowa. Ron Paul support grows every day. Every type of person- from young first time voters to 86 year old farmers and everyone in between. We are all waking up, and know we need to fight to change things for the better. do your own research, decide for yourselves and GO VOTE…- the best thing you can do is plan to take a carload of fellow supporters to go vote for RP on the 10th. At the IOWA caucus in my county they expected 200 to turn out. Guess what- over 800- and i would guess half… Read more »
The problem with Ron Paul, his politics aside is that he suffers from JFK syndrome. He thinks he is going to be in charge if he gets elected. Kennedy was going to smash the CIA into a thousand pieces, how did that work out? The military will do what the military sees fit to do, it's a sad fact that we must accept. USA still greatest nation in the world. Ron Paul will not have the power to make good on his promises. It's good he wants to try to change things but he simply wont have the power to… Read more »
