Subject: These Jail Guards Are Awesome
No joke ¨I sincerely mean it. I am on day 21 of the Derrick J incarceration count-up, and I will tell you honestly that the men and women who work as guards in the Cheshire County House of Corrections are friendly, professional, honest and helpful. Kudos to the person in charge of hiring!
By now, I’ve met every guard who works here. Each greets me with a smile, treats me with respect, and speaks to me like a fellow human being. It is remarkable, and I would be remiss if I would give all but two guards no less than an “A” rating.
Those who consistently wear a smile receive an “A+”, and because of their exceptional positivity, they deserve a special mention. They are, in no particular order, Mr. Breyer, Mz. Nye, Mz. Kennedy, Mr. Coyle, Mr. Marsh, Mz. Gagnon, Mz. Powers, Mr. Pangelini, and Mr. Costin.
All the rest receive “A’s” for supreme excellence and professionalism. Except two.
There are only two guards who do not receive A ratings or higher. Mr. Tann (mentioned in an earlier post) and Mr. Griffin (also known to the inmates as Captain America) display consistent negative attitudes. Attitudes are contagious and have the ability to spread to inmates, and bad attitudes often cause unnecessary conflict and tension. They both receive “F’s” for frequent use of foul and unprofessional language, being distinctly unhelpful to inmates, and for returning my friendliest greetings with snide remarks or silence.
If I, as an inmate, am able to maintain a consistently positive attitude, then so can the individuals who are here for pay, right?
