According to an email from city clerk Patty Little, they found an error in their calculations spreadsheet revealing that fewer ballots were cast than their numbers originally showed. As a result, voter turnout was 69% of registered voters in Keene, not the 76% as reported by the clerk’s original numbers.
Kudos to Patty and the crew there for being willing to take a second look at their numbers. Here’s her email explaining what had gone wrong:
Hi Ian, I have had a chance to review your questions and have attached an updated spreadsheet of election activity. We decided that our previous spreadsheet was confusing because the number of absentee ballots was already included in the total ballots cast figure…and also inaccurate because the “formula” was accounting for absentee ballots twice. In addition, to clarifying the layout of the spreadsheet, we’ve updated some of the actual figures based upon corrections made to the Secretary of State and the correct “formula.” (more…)

Congratulations to Free State Project participant Tim O’Flaherty for winning his state representative race in Manchester. Tim self-describes as an anarchist and has won as a Democrat in a race against a small government Republican, who happens to be Tim’s roommate, Dan Garthwaite, another early mover for the FSP.
Comedy central even ran a campaign profile on Tim.

As you know I was recently arrested in Palmer, MA for recording video in town hall. The pretrial hearing is on 12/10 at 9am in Palmer district court, however I hope to bypass that, as typically pretrials are a waste of everyone’s time. I’m filing a motion to do that as well is filing for discovery, a jury trial, recording, and to dismiss/strike the case. For those of you that enjoy the legal end of things, here’s what I’m mailing out today:

It’s about time people started promoting this issue. Thanks to Neal Connor and the activists behind the Foundation for New Hampshire Independence, a brand new group created to advocate for NH secession. Ben Leubsdorf at the Concord Monitor reports:
Comparing the United States to the Roman Empire in decline, five New Hampshire residents have established a nonprofit group to advocate for the Granite State’s secession and independence.
“This nation has grown too large to be represented by a few people, a few bureaucrats, in Washington. . . . New Hampshire is a small state, and we here in New Hampshire can take care of our own,” said Neal Conner, a technology consultant from Manchester and treasurer of the Foundation for New Hampshire Independence.
The foundation was established as a nonprofit corporation Sept. 14, with an office in Manchester and the goal of educating residents “on the benefits of the state of New Hampshire peacefully declaring its independence and separating from the United States,” according to a filing with the secretary of state’s office. Liberty activists handing out quarter-page fliers advocating for libertarian candidates Ian Freeman and Darryl Perry were targeted in a sneaky manner by election officials. When voters would enter the building the poll workers would tell them it was illegal for them to have the flyer and then snatch it from them and throw it away. Hearing this from an exiting voter, I investigated and found the claim to be true.

Despite the “Department of Justice” sending an agent down to ostensibly correct the Ward 4 staff, the behavior continued later, as we also documented. The clueless ward moderator claimed she was too busy to properly educate her volunteer “greeters” (enforcers) on the law, which she herself did not know.
As a result, countless voters had their rights oppressed by officious bureaucrats who made the law up on the spot. We documented and called them on it and the behavior continued. Apparently they were pulling out all the stops to prevent the libertarians from getting as many votes as possible.
The DOJ is aware of this situation but don’t expect any actual consequences to come to these government workers. Odds are they’ll be back at it next time, too.
