This morning, locals report that government workers were spraying and scrubbing in an attempt to remove the evidence of yesterday’s apparent self-immolation in front of the Cheshire superior court. I stopped by early this morning to file some motions in another case and talk to the Sheriffs about yesterday and took a picture of the damage. Click the pic for a full size version.
It’s going to take more than a hose and brush to make this issue go away. People need to know who this man was and why he made this horrific choice.
More as it develops. Thus far, no return calls from Keene Police or Cheshire Sheriffs.
Update for search results: The man who self-immolated was Thomas Ball aka Tom Ball. Here’s a detailed article about it.
Slate.com is huge. Alexa ranks it as around 1,200th most popular in the world and 385th most popular in the US. It’s a respected online magazine and reporter David Weigel has over 30,000 twitter followers. Thanks to David for making the drive to Keene to explore the unique liberty movement that is the Free State Project, and more specifically the interesting cast of liberty activists that call Keene their home. Here’s his excellent article. Be sure to hit the like button at the bottom of their article!
Oh, and several people David met are older than him, including me, but he’s right, there are a lot of younger adults in this movement. The families and business owners take a longer time to move, but they are coming! Also, I’m sure many liberty activists would self describe as pro-liberty or being in favor of self-government rather than describe as anti-government. Even without those minor corrections this is an amazing piece.
Keene Police were not giving out much info, but there is a dead body out front of Cheshire Superior Court and a large amount of charring on the sidewalk in front of the courthouse. Police scanner recordings confirm this is a case of suicide by self-immolation. You can listen to the Keene police scanner here.
Makes you wonder what the court did to the poor guy/gal. More details as we learn them:
PORTSMOUTH — Members of the group Cop Block, who say they organized to hold police officers accountable by filming them at work, announced plans to protest in the city today.
The group’s founder, who goes by the name Ademo Freeman, was arrested earlier this week in Manchester on charges alleging he defaced that city’s police headquarters with chalk and resisted arrest while “cop blocking.” According to the New Hampshire Union Leader, Cop Block members followed and filmed Manchester police officers on Friday night, then followed up by writing anti-police slogans on the police station during a protest the following day. The Concord Monitor’s report focuses on Garret Ean of Concord, who is a blogger at FreeConcord.org and was arrested in the mass arrests of liberty activists outside Manch PD on Saturday. Thanks to Matthew Spolar for the story:
A Concord activist was among eight people arrested at a protest outside the Manchester police station this weekend.
Garret Ean, a 22-year-old Pleasant Street resident who lost a race for a House seat last year, was charged with disorderly conduct at a Saturday afternoon protest that called for more accountability within the Manchester Police Department.
Ean said the protest, organized by copblock.org, a law enforcement watchdog site, was held in reaction to two recent headlines: an attorney general’s report clearing off-duty officers in the beating of a man outside the Strange Brew Tavern and the shooting of a man during a standoff last month.
“We felt someone was needed to bring it to Manchester PD’s attention that there are people who do want to hold them accountable for their actions,” Ean said yesterday. (more…)
