Most trials are pretty dull, but this one has lots of laughs and absurdities as the Sheriff attempts to defend his shoddy and unconstitutional order and the women that work at the court claim they were scared of peaceful, singing activists who dared ask them questions!

While filming the merry antics of the Vermin Supreme campaign on November fifth, the eve of the election, myself and another videographer witnessed Manchester police remove an attendee from the Romney rally venue. After a lengthy conversation with a few officers outside of my view, we notice the man being dragged to the ground by three before being placed into a prisoner transport van. It’s difficult to make out the exchanges between the parties over the blaring music of the Mitt Romney/Kid Rock performance. Body language indicates that at one point, the officer appeared to try to take the man into custody, but he backs away and is not heartily pursued. The third party candidate tries to deescalate the situation with police by asking if the man is free to go, to which the officer implied that he wanted the man to leave. It’s possible that the arrested individual was not in the right state of mind and very uncomfortable, as it was near freezing temperatures at the time that this footage was shot.
It’s unclear what the man has been charged with, and a call to Manchester’s public information unit told me that no records were accessible until Monday. The only information regarding an arrest that I have found for this date is a blog entry by presidential campaign follower Ray LeMoine posting on TheAwl.com. The author reports: (more…)

An article in the Washington Post that has been widely syndicated discusses how the collection of evidence by the use of drug detector dogs will be considered by the united states supreme court. Two cases are pending on the docket, both from Florida, which question the effectiveness as well as the constitutionality of canines for drug detection use. The article cites studies from the University of California at Davis in which 18 police canine teams were sent through a facility and tasked with finding hidden drugs. Though there were no drugs in the facility, 17 of the teams reported alerts. Barry Cooper, former police officer and producer of the Never Get Busted educational film series has discussed his own manipulation of police canines while he was working as one of the most successful narcotics interdiction detectives. Anyone who has owned a dog knows that their life revolves around serving their pack leader. There are no objective standards or testing done of the animals to demonstrate their effectiveness. In a 2005 case, former supreme court judge David Souter stated that the infallible dog “is a creation of legal fiction”.
Last year, the Florida supreme court had thrown out a case from 2006 which featured questionable probable cause for a search after a police dog sniffed and acted playfully. Judge Barbara Pariente wrote: (more…)
Earlier today, the police in the Town of Palmer ignored the historic Glik decision that affirms your right to record government employees in the performance of their duties, and went ahead and arrested a cameraman, me, for recording video in their town hall. Darryl described the scene earlier. A longer video is coming, but for now, here’s the video of us entering the town of Palmer offices, the arrest, to when the cops turn the camera off:

1. Here’s the Zekos Group announcement of the auction, which I downloaded from their website, that clearly states, “This will be a very open, public, and professional process“. Other attendees were denyed entry to the auction – unless they had a $5,000 cashier’s check.

PALMER – During a public auction of town-owned properties on Thursday, only registered bidders were allowed to attend, the media and other members of the public were banned, and a New Hampshire man was arrested.
Town officials took the unusual step of allowing only registered bidders inside the auction, held inside the Town Building on Main Street, to prevent a group of protesters from potentially disrupting the proceedings. (more…)
