Consequences The Smoking Ban Will Bring To Keene
Earlier this week the New Hampshire Senate passed a smoking ban that will bar smoking in all restaurants and cocktail lounges in the state. Supported both by many republicans and the new wave of democrats, the bill suppresses business owners’ ability to make decisions about their businesses. Individuals who frequent bars and restaurants are not forced into a smoking atmosphere, they make the decision to patronize such establishments on their own. In the same respect, workers are not forced to breathe in second hand smoke. Bar tenders and wait staff are free to quit and work for a restaurant or bar that bans smoking voluntarily. Read more
A productive first Free Keene meeting
Ten people turned out to our first Free Keene meeting this afternoon, including the organizer of The New Hampshire Coalition for Common Sense Marijuana Policy (NH Common Sense for short). As usual, I was impressed with the enthusiasm and creativity the attendees expressed.
The topics of discussion began with the current situation on HB92, a bill designed to eliminate marijuana from the criminal drug laws as I understand it. If you have not done so already, please sign the petition. Also, stay tuned for a monthly newsletter and action alerts coming soon from NH Common Sense.
A brainstorming session for the upcoming 2007 municipal elections in Keene followed, including the discussion of what issues the people of Keene care about the most, and activating and encouraging Keene State students to get out and vote.
I encourage fellow liberty lovers and Keene-iacs in the area to attend in March!
Does Keene Need A New Jail?
Last week the Keene Sentinel reported that there is no opposition to the new proposal for a jail site on the Hill property on Route 101 in Keene. Once again the Sentinel has gotten the story wrong. There are many objections not only to the new jail site, but also to the housing and corporate park proposal. Some people have voiced concern over the fact that the site lies on top of a landfill which contains hazardous waste, and others are concerned with the traffic problem the proposed site will bring, but my objection lies in the fundamental concept of building a new jail. The Keene City Council Votes In Favor of Eminent Domain

The Keene City Council has voted 9 to 6 in favor of of forcibly taking private property from a Keene resident for “the good of the community.†For years, the council and Keene residents have debated over whether or not a roundabout should be built at the Main, Winchester, and Marlboro street intersection, but until recently eminent domain was not on the table. Thomas Eaton, who owns the land in question, was considering selling the coveted piece of property to the city of Keene, but when the project skyrocketed over the projected budget to over $4 million, he withdrew the offer. Dumping on the Dumpster Rules
Recently I interviewed John Croteau about this ridiculous, selectively enforced dumpster-fencing rule in Keene. Go to www.wkbkam.com and select “streaming audio”. You’ll find the interview in my archives. Tip: for some unknown reason you can download the interview with Firefox but only stream it in IE unless the station has fixed the problem. If you’d like a download link to the interview email me at ericscottshow AT gmail DOT com.
