The brilliant John Stossel takes some powerful pro-liberty ideas and delivers them effectively to a wide audience. Here’s his latest 1 hour special, the “Politically Incorrect Guide to Politics”. This is a great video to show anyone still “in the system” and new to liberty. Stossel makes it crystal clear that government doesn’t work and that it creates devastating unintended consequences:

Freedom Couch Update: “City” Rejects My Offer

Filed under: Issues, News, Personal Freedom, Response, Thuggery, Update — Ian at 10:26 pm on Friday, October 31, 2008

Freedom CouchIf you’ve been following this blog within the past few months, you’re well aware of the situation wherein the people calling themselves the “City of Keene” have been threatening me over a couch in my tenants yard. In case you need to catch up, here are the two most recent posts on the issue prior to this one: post 1, post 2. The current situation is that they are demanding I come to their “trial” about this issue on November 14th at 1:30 PM in Keene “district court”.

“Why don’t you just move the couch?”, you might ask. The answer is it’s my tenants’ lawn, they utilize the couch for Halloween decorations, in the other seasons of the year it’s relatively unobtrusive, plus no one has ever complained, until recently. The people calling themselves the “city” claim that there is a complainant who lives down the street, however this person allegedly refuses to meet me and talk to me like an adult. Instead, the alleged neighbor calls the Blue Light Gang to try to intimidate me into disposing of the couch. (Read on …)

Minarchism: The Red-Headed Ethical Self-Contradiction of Libertarianism

Filed under: Economic Freedom, Essay, Hypocrisy, Personal Freedom, Rant — AnarchoJesse at 10:17 am on Friday, October 31, 2008

The basic idea of minarchism is that the government should be expressly small and limited to the defense of person and property of those within the territorial dominion of the government. This generally implies that the government’s services be limited to the provision of police, courts and defense. Most minarchists accept, or at least claim to accept, the core axiom to the libertarianism itself– the principle of the non-aggression. They seek to attain a government that functions only for defensive purposes, while completely abstaining from initiating aggression. But if the minarchist sincerely does favor the principle of the non-initiation of aggression, they are contradicting their own ethical premise in supporting the existence of a government in the first place. For how are even these limited defensive services to be payed for? Most minarchists favor some limited form of taxation, which is inherently coercive. (Read on …)

Keene Cops Attempt Crackdown on Peaceful Festival Attendees!

Filed under: Audio, Copwatch, Corruption, Free Minds TV, Freedom Fest, Hypocrisy, Issues, News, Personal Freedom, Police — Ian at 11:43 pm on Thursday, October 30, 2008

RiveraIf you’ve been watching the blog here at FreeKeene.com, you’ve no doubt already seen the multiple Ridley Report entries covering the Keene Police’s attempted crackdown on the Fall 2008 Keene Freedom Festival. Liberty activists and other members of the public were enjoying themselves at Railroad Square this past Sunday. Several organizations were doing outreach, there was a gambling table, live music by the Josh Noone Band (Here’s a live recording of “hypocrisy” from Freedom Fest.) and others, and lots of socializing and networking going on. Then, about an hour into the event, “city prosecutor” Elizer Rivera, showed up in a police uniform with three of his associates, “detective” William Sargent, “lieutenant” Jay Dugay, and “officer” Matt Griffin. Griffin was observing from across the street, while Sargent acted as the silent heavy. Dugay at least had a friendly demeanor even though he was threatening all of the attendees with arrest allegedly for illegally assembling without a permit. In the video footage, you can see I got him to laugh when I caught him saying something particularly silly. Dugay clearly would rather have been doing something else, but is not willing to refuse to follow bad orders.

Moments after their arrival, the police were surrounded by activists, many of whom were armed with video cameras or audio recorders. Even though Dugay claimed that they were responding to an alleged complaint and were investigating whether the Freedom Fest attendees had a permit or not, Rivera’s actions contradicted Dugay’s statements.
