Social Sundays Moves to 5pm at Armadillo’s!

As a result of the incredibly popular 4:20 celebrations happening daily in Keene’s Central Square, turnout was way down for this past week’s Social Sundays. Plus, prior to the advent of the 4:20 events, the attendance at Social Sundays tended to ramp up and peak at 5pm. It seems that having Social Sundays begin after the 4:20 celebration would be the best approach. People can show up at 5pm and enjoy Social Sundays and the food at Armadillo’s Burritos after enjoying a nice afternoon toke in Central Square!

So, starting this weekend join us for Social Sundays at Armadillo’s at 82 Main St. starting at 5pm and ending whenever! Get more info on this forum thread.

Concord Monitor Reports on Keene’s Daily Cannabis Celebrations

cannabisThanks to the Concord Monitor’s Ray Duckler for this report:

Rich Paul smokes pot. So do dozens of his new friends. Each day lately, in Central Square, right in the middle of Keene.

They huff and they puff and they blow the smoke out, daring the police to arrest them while they make their point. Smoking pot, they believe, should be legal, because smoking pot is their constitutional right. The war on drugs creates violence and unnecessarily jams our prisons, they say.

And Paul alluded to these points yesterday, telling about 100 people through a bullhorn. His voice was measured yet confident. The rally started in the afternoon, at 4:20, the insider’s term for pot smoking. No one seems to know why. Nobody seems to care, either. Read more

WBZ TV in Boston Reports on Keene’s 4:20 Cannabis Celebrations

cannabisI have no way to embed the video, but thanks to WBZ’s Dawn Hasbrouck for this video report. Here’s the text version of the story which includes a link to Free Keene!

Advocates for the decriminalization of marijuana gathered in Keene, New Hampshire on Monday in Central Square to try and get their message heard. The crowd has grown from about 20 people to about 100 since the group began gathering on Tuesday. Many of them are smoking pot right out in the open.

They’ve gathered at 4:20 p.m. every day, a significant time in the cannabis culture. “We want to bring this message of freedom to as many people around the world as possible,” said Ian Freeman, who is a blogger on FreeKeene.com.

“We’re actually gonna come out here in public and make it known how we feel and put pressure on the politicians,” says Andrew Carroll, another protester who plans to run for office in 2010.

Evolving Beyond Retribution

An open letter to activists espousing violence as a form of activism against statism.

A shepherd had a nice flock of sheep but he was endlessly frustrated because his neighbor had more sheep than him. One day he had just birthed a new lamb only to discover that his neighbor had birthed two and was even further ahead of him. He’d had it. That night and every night thereafter, he began to complain about it in his prayers.

“Lord, Manuel now has five more sheep than me. I work just as hard as him and take good care of my sheep and it’s just not fair!”

After many nights of prayers full of whining and complaining about what he perceived as a terrible injustice, he heard a clear voice in his head.

“Alright! Alright! Just stop complaining and I will help you, but only this once. Then you are on your own. I don’t want to hear another word about it!” answered the Lord.

“Oh, thank you Lord! You are truly just! So… you are going to kill five of Manuel’s sheep?”

I believe the story was meant as an analogy about far left politics and what seems like a desire to drag everyone down to an equal level of misery. It may not seem to relate to retribution, but it does address a flaw in our thinking that fuels what I see as a pointless desire for retribution.

Keene Sentinel Covers Police Station Smoke-In

POtThey arrested our friend, so the cannabis celebration was brought inside the Keene police lobby yesterday, as the Sentinel’s Anika Clark reports:

Supporters of marijuana legalization took their fight with a law directly to the law Sunday as they lit up in the Keene Police Station lobby.

They puffed. They cheered and laughed. They left. But not before one of them yelled at a department employee who was working behind a front window.

One of the rally-goers had just been released without being charged, after being arrested for smoking what he said was nothing more than mint leaves. But activist Sam A. Miller said, “What they smoked inside the police station today, that was real. … I could tell from the smell.” Read more
