Feeding “the Flame”

Social Sundays has had a tough time finding a regular venue since the decision to move on from Vendetta was made. Abunara (which means “the flame” in Arabic) is a private, middle-eastern themed cultural club located at the Center at Keene. They will begin opening on Sundays this week. They offer a great selection of Mediterranean cuisine, made from scratch. Open carry is fine. For more information visit them on the web. http://www.abunara.com/

Membership is $20 per year, which allows you to bring two guests. As a member, you can come in and merely hang out without being expected to spend money. Until further notice, it is BYOB, but cigarettes are not allowed. Hope to see you all Sunday at 5.

Editor’s note: This is a special Private Club edition of Social Sundays. Abunara accepts members over 18 years of age and younger people are allowed with their parents. This event is in addition to the current 3pm public event at the other location. See this forum thread for details.

Now Is the Time for All Good Porcs to Come to the Aid of Their Brethren

As the court is clearly not going to do the right thing with Kurt, it’s become necessary to ratchet up our protestation to a new level. There are now daily candlelight vigils, as announced on the forums within, and it’s time to let the general citizenry — the folks who really matter in all this — know that options are available to them. We need to start getting down to the court each morning, as the crowds are arriving to be processed through the obedience machine, to tell them, with signs, songs, flyers, and discussion, that this could happen to any one of us, and will, if we don’t start pushing back!
I have plenty of appropriate signs, and anyone may come over to paint a personal one — just contact me. I’m also working on an outreach flyer with an artist. I’d like to hear from anyone else who has other suggestions for making this a success.

One of the problems with these events is the silence — often broken and filled with patter, chatter and inappropriate laughter. Read more

High School Outreach Success

Dale and I went out to hold the Free Keene banner outside Keene high school and Dave Ridley was there to cover it. It’s too bad he didn’t come out for the second one, as we had several young people out with us including at least a couple KHS students. This event will be weekly on Fridays at 2pm in front of KHS until further notice. Check the Calendar for more stuff to do.

HIPAA Violation? Or Excuse for Control?

When videographers tried to document Kurt Hoffman being taken out of the Keene District Court on a stretcher, they were met with extreme resistance, forced into a side room, and issued threats of being penalized for violating HIPAA.

Not once has anyone been able to show us the text of HIPAA that restricts people from recording patients in public. In fact, you may be surprised to see that in the video below, a videographer in Keene openly records the scene of an accident and the patient, without his consent, and the police don’t even seem to acknowledge it as an issue.

Voter Intimidation Continues in Keene

On the day of the general election I went to Ward 4′s voting location with the intention of voting for Free Keene’s Nick Ryder. As the city clerk had promised, I had indeed been removed from the voters’ rolls because I’d registered to vote with my “domicile” as my box at the UPS Store. On the day of the general election I was homeless and decided to register to vote as such. As happened during the primary, they did everything they could to prevent me from taking part in their system. (Interestingly, people like me who prefer outside-the-system activism are incessantly told that we should work within the system, but if we try to, this is the kind of crap that happens.)

So I tried to register as a homeless person and despite signing TWO forms under penalty of perjury (the “domicile affidavit” and the “voter challenge affidavit”) they STILL refused to accept my registration! I immediately pulled out my blackberry and QIKked their explanation. Turns out because the “checklist supervisor” didn’t FEEL like I was homeless, that was enough to deny me the right to vote. It didn’t matter one iota that I’d sworn an oath to my claim being true. My supposed right to vote was DENIED. Watch as it happened:

A Cautionary Tale

I always had a soft spot for story songs — too much of one, perhaps. I even quite liked “Tie a Yellow Ribbon,” until overplay and dubious associations ruined it permanently.
It was inevitable that I’d try writing some of my own. Read more
