Opening Doors for People is Considered “Impeding”?

This morning, activists gathered for a grand jury outreach event at the Cheshire superior court. The last time we had a confrontation by the armed men was the very first week almost two years ago where they merely asked what we were there doing. Now, all of a sudden, they have decided to threaten us over, of all things, opening the door for the people entering the building! First a grumpy white-haired female bailiff came out and demanded we stop opening the door for people. When we indicated we had no intention of stopping, she said she’d get the sheriffs. I didn’t have enough time to get my QIK.com broadcasting for this encounter, but I certainly had it ready for when four uniformed armed men came out and did their best to try to intimidate us. More video from another angle to come, but for now, here’s the raw video as originally broadcast at QIK.com. According to the costumed men, it is apparently disorderly conduct and impeding traffic when we hold open the door. Clearly we should have known we were in the people’s way when they smile at us and thank us for getting the door for them! Needless to say, we continued to open the door for folks, despite the threats. Visit the Free Keene Forum for more info on regular jury outreach and grand jury outreach.

Government thugs are unbelievable! Do they have any grasp of reality at all?

Trifith

Who wants to go open doors at the courthouse today, say around noon when everybody is going to lunch?

Lord Metroid

Don't be courteus by opening doors for people, you are totally ruining the intimidating atmosphere the bureaucrats are trying to create.

Paul

Nicely done folks.

"Serve and protect" people from having the door opened for them!? When you think you've heard it all, it just gets even more ridiculous.

I like trifith's idea.

Keith

That is crazy. I understand the screening process is slow and causes long lines at times, but opening a door is wrong? I did it earlier this month and got many thank yous. Maybe the cops are doing this because they don't want people to say thank you to those that support freedom?

Johnny Juárez

The bald silent cop looks like he's been eating very well. You're welcome, bald short silent and (kinda) fat cop!

Chaz Munro

Only inside a cop's mind is helping people to keep them from impeding traffic flow to be impeding.

Have you considered telling them that what you film is going straight to the net, in case they get any camera grabbing ideas? I wish their kids could see these so-called "servants" on the net so they can ask them the burning question, "Dad, why do you do this to people? They're not hurting anyone."

Chaz Munro

That's good to know, Ian.

I just got the impression that they would just mindlessly believe that if they grabbed your camera it wouldn't occur to them that they were being streamed & they'd just assume that once the tape was erased that they'd be off the hook for any thuggery committed.

I'm glad to know that you guys are on top of things. One less thing for me to worry about.

Dan

He's just trying to have a one-sided conversation with you.

Dan Garthwaite

Well done guys! On high profile weeks, I would consider out dressing them in suit and tie. But that's just me.

Susan Mason

No they don't, Brodie.

Paul

That's a good idea Dan G.

Lord Metroid

If you dress in suit and tie than I would recommend you have matching cloth and maybe the pamphlet needs some changing to make it look more authoritative rather than an outreach pamphlet(if it isn't already good looking).

This could hopefully put even further legitimacy to the idea that are presented to the people handed the pamphlet.

Seth

"Do you want me to get that for you?" And then he opens the door for the cop! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHA

Thomas Mc

Um, during the discussion I noticed a couple of deputies opening and holding the door for other deputies. Shouldn't they be warning one another?

Nick Ryder

I fear we have months, maybe years, of inside jokes whenever a Keeniac holds the door for another.

It won't even be funny the first time. Just saying.

I always go to court like I'm on my way to a Southern Baptist revival: decked out to the 9's. New Englanders can't help but stare. 😀

Dan Garthwaite

Last time I had to appear in a courtroom was 2007 in Concord, NH (and I hadn't even moved yet.) I was dressed up and hanging out in the hallway. There were a gaggle of cops chatting nearby and one stopped the conversation to ask if I were an attorney. When I said "No." they removed themselves from earshot.

I love the Free Keene style!

Come on guys. I admire what you're doing, and similar FIJA projects. But why does EVERYTHING have to be a confrontation? What is it about us libertarians that causes our ego to need to be "right" all the time, instead of picking our battles. From the very beginning, the cop isn't being all that unreasonable. There are dozens of incidents every year where cops in similar situations behave 100 times worse, arresting, assaulting, and denying citizens their right to even BE there. How about this: you take him up on his "offer" when he says "stay out here, do your… Read more »

The dress up idea works very nicely.Suit and tie, haircut and shave, briefcase with papers or a folder, you can get lots of places when you dress like you belong.I have even talked to cops that were looking for me,and they never even suspected who I was. This also works if you want to bother the financial folks in the banks, too.Another arm of the corporatocracy. When you have the professional camera, use a hand mike with a mike box,and some made up name or station, pretend to be the 'real' news, getting a scoop about these Keeniacs.Watch how the cops manners change.Just use someone they don't recognise as… Read more »

@Jack, How about looking at the bigger picture and not letting the oppression grow by going along to get along?

SuJin

LOL. Thing are getting stupider by the day. And my family wonders why the little things bother me… If they can get away with little crap like that they know they can get away with so much more. :C

jack: first off, i didn't see you there, so everything you said with the word "we" doesn't really apply to this situation. i saw nothing reasonable in the way the court and state staff acted today. scream and threaten people for being polite? calling the sheriff to come and intimidate, possibly arrest those people when they didn't stop being polite? bring out 4 huge "legally lethal" thugs to try to intimidate 4 not so huge peaceful activists? none of that is reasonable to me. i understand you, along with many other people, want to run "Liberty PR Campaigns". unfortunately, being… Read more »

Can't agree with you on this one Jack. The idea that holding doors open for people is impeding them is absurd. Absurd and arbitrary diktats should be met with laughter, not obedience. These men are not kings.

Rob

The whole impeding flow thing made me think of the Mitch Hedberg joke: "If you're flammable and have legs, you're never blocking a fire exit."

I LOVE that Sam went to open the door for one of the "sheriff people".

bil

So is each event a seperate movement? If someone supports the group, but doesn't attend a 'function',they somehow have a less valid opinion. Is the use of the general 'we' to be left for only comments pertaining to an event that was personally attended? Will someone be taking attendance? Shame on you ,Jack, for having an opinion while not actually attending.Further use of the inclusive 'we' is not allowed until 'you' become a 'we'.Don't feel bad,I am not a 'we' either. Not an obvious one, anyway. I have been working against the abuses of the system, and the system itself, since before most of the 'we's' were born.I just… Read more »

i said that because i don't believe myself to be a member of any collective "we". i say "we" when i talk about the people i'm with when describing an event, or in a collective sense to state facts (for example: we all breathe oxygen). but when describing "freedom activism", i never want people to lump me in with any "we". I am an individual. i perform activism with others, but i do not control or dictate their behaviors; they don't control or dictate mine; and i am not responsible for the actions of others. i have problems with someone… Read more »

Depending on where you _actually_ stand, it could be considered intimidation.

I.e., if you stand to the side, and reach across to open the door, saying. "Let me open that for you." This would be legal, but if you stand so that you could legitimately be considered as "blocking" the door, you would be in the wrong.

Never, ever, give them an excuse to make a legitimate complaint. If the theoretical "reasonable person," could misconstrue your actions, don't do it. Then, if they act unreasonably, you make them look stupid. In fact, you can then file abuse of authority complaints.
