The Best Episode of Talkback So Far This Year
A bunch of liberty-minded people called “Talkback” on WKBK last week to discuss noncooperation, fearing neighbors, micromanaging, blindly enforcing “the law”, police abuse, Eli Rivera, customer service, dumpster regulations, cost cutting, and property taxes. Cynthia and Nat get very frustrated with principled, peaceful people calling in. Their cognitive dissonance is very heavy. You’ll hear lots of defending institutionalized violence by the statist callers and hosts. Plus Nat gets particularly uncomfortable and starts laying down all kinds of new rules as far as what types of calls he thinks Talkback should accept. Finally, the smooth professional bureaucrat swoops in to rescue the part-time city councilors! Listen as Keene city manager John MacLean just happens to drop by the studio in a clear attempt to assist Cynthia and Nat in handling the unusual amount of logical, compassionate voices of liberty activists calling in. This is an epic episode.

Ian, the audio was only 10 seconds long when I played it for some reason. I hope it gets fixed. Thanks.
Working fine for me.. clocks in at just under 58 minutes. Anyone else having trouble?
Worked for me.
I tried it again and it works. It was a good show. Thanks.
Did she really say she thought the Fugitive Slave Law should have been enforced? I’ve never actually heard anyone admit to something like that. I’d like to send this MP3 to the NAACP and see what they say.
I wonder if she’d be happy to see the Nuremberg Laws enforced? They were laws, right?
Wasn’t Thoreau a New Englander? The idea of civil disobedience influenced the entire world–it ought to be second nature to small town New Englanders.
Actually, if you think about it, the idea that laws shouldn’t be mechanically enforced is built into our system with the separation of powers. The original idea–not talking about the Dept. of Justice (sic)–was that the executive would be separate from the legislature and could resist enforcing unjust laws, or any laws. Also, originally, juries were empowered to nullify cases–another important check on political power.
Of course these ideas have been defunct for a long time, but they seem to be enjoying sort of a renaissance on the Internet, and I hope to see them flourishing someday. You guys are doing good stuff. Keep it up.
PS – I like how these bullying petty tyrants and complacent jerks claim that you’re bullying them when you challenge them. It’s great to see. Long live the Internet.
Wonderful post. I could literally hear the dissonance in their voices, coupled with a palpable nervousness and shortness of breath as they tried to reconcile their positions with the reality of the world around them. One can only hope that they will soon snap out of their state-induced comas and stop initiating force against peaceful people.
Favorite Quote:
Caller: “You guys need to seriously cut spending.”
Cynthia: “I disagree.” (the “…and I’ll send cops to your house to collect the money I want to spend” was silent”)
That lady host is a nutcase. The male host sounds like a very unhappy man who needs a hug. If he doesnt like more freedom he should move to NY.
Wow, those hosts were really shaken. I guess that’s what happens when you have no response to an argument other than stifling it.
Many of the discussions were very enjoyable, however the overall idea that the hosts discomfort displays the level of victory is a touch disturbing.
I really enjoyed the last caller’s rational and to the point discussion of both the dumpster regulation and the methods to cut spending. Nothing could be more telling of the local governments inability to cut spending than their answers; blame the state government or ask for an income tax (because we need more money to waste).
“The police come up to you and say, ‘you know it’s not legal to do this.’ Then the person should say, ‘oops, sorry about that.’ …they’re not enforcing it…they’re just reminding you.”
What planet does this lady live on?

The planet bureaucrats live on. I don’t doubt that’s how Cynthia would be treated if she did something illegal — just as the police get kid gloves when they break the law. The government members looks out for each other.
I think the reality, that cops will use every opportunity to go after people, even if they present no danger to others, and even if their actions are purely unintentional, simply does not occur to Cynthia.

I agree, I’d prefer if this discussion could be had without such frustration by the hosts. I’m not sure there’s a way to do it though. Frankly, their frustration seemed not to be dependent on the rudeness of the callers, but on the quality of their arguments. They really didn’t want to have people poke holes in their critically flawed assertions.
I do encourage people to be as polite as possible.

Captain Power! The planet is yours!
Really great debate and commentary on the show. I suggest that it would be useful to take advantage of the KPD service that Cynthia mentioned, whereby the KPD comes and checks on your house when you are not home.
Sam, give the KPD a call for this service before you go to court. That way when you aren’t going home, you will know that the cops are looking after your property.
This is classic. Better than stand up comedy. I lost track of how many times Lumpy called. And when Meg said, “Well if that’s your complaint, you can come talk to me about it,” that was too funny.
That female host said “This is not the freestater show.” Talk about a jinx.
Man, those are some hardcore statists running that show.
The women who called and announced the Camera Complaint Desk to be set up at city hall, was awesome and a cool customer. I LMAO when she suggested that if Nat doesn’t think it’s courteous or appropriate to hold the event, that he should come down and register his complaint on camera.
Beautiful! What an on-the-ball retort!
While I agree with you overall, Alfonso Montealegre, I would note that Thoreau’s civil disobedience didn’t really cause much. His influence was recognize more as an afterthought to a growing trend more than anything. Thoreau was one of those great people who weren’t widely recognized in his own time period.
From 1838 to 1976 it was legal for any person to use force to kick Mormons out of Missouri, including killing them. Would Cynthia uphold this law and want to see it enforced while it is enacted?

“the Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State if necessary for the public peace”
“Should the Jim Crow laws have been enforced?”
*silence*
Owned.
You guys really need to ask Cynthia about all the wetlands that her management company has been filling in for years, behind Hannafords. They’ve probably got 1/2 acre or more, 4 – 8 feet deep in brush, lawn clippings, etc….I’m not saying it’s wrong, or illegal, but, *WHAT ARE the Nh & Fed rules & Regs. on filling wetlands???…Yes, Cynthia Georgina thinks that she’s above the law. She’s on the Jumanjiville town council. Duh. No brainer alert…&, she has to keep doing what she’s doing, to maintain her reputation. But, the more she keeps doing it, the stupider she looks, which threatens her reputation…I feel sorry for her. At least my life isn’t about fucking people over…
