Fred Parsells Appears to be a Thief – UPDATED

About five minutes after sending me an email threatening me over my Liberty 94.3 yard sign, Fred Parsells arrives, parks in the street, and appears to steal the same sign from my neighbor Clyde Freeman’s yard. Why didn’t he come steal the one from my yard? He claims in his email it was due to the NO TRESPASS NOTICE I issued to all city employees back in May 2011 – apparently that actually stops him from coming on the property without a court order. Here is surveillance video of Fred committing the act this morning at 11:35-37am:

Will Fred be held accountable for his crime? Doubtful. Remember, it’s not stealing when people calling themselves “the government” take things that don’t belong to them. Stay tuned for updates. I’m not taking the sign down.

UPDATE: Fred claims he didn’t steal the sign and that he was “authorized” by Clyde to remove it.

Here’s Fred’s email, where he tries to play like he is my buddy. Hey Fred, I don’t know how you were raised, but I was raised to think that friends shouldn’t steal from each other.

RE: 73-75 Leveret Street sign violation

Greetings and Happy New Year Ian:

Recently it has come to the attention of the City of Keene/me via an anonymous complaint made to the Keene Police Department that there is an illegal sign on your property located at 73-75 Leveret Street. Although I am otherwise banned from stepping foot onto your property, except under color of a court-ordered administrative warrant, I was asked by the City Attorney’s office to notify you of the complaint and violation as noted below. In that you and I have and do communicate by email, I am opting for this means of communication so that my and the City’s effort of notification is well documented.

Pursuant to Section 102-242, Uses Regulated by Districts, and Article VIII, Sign Regulations, of the City’s Zoning Ordinance, signs are not permitted in the residential zoning district in which your Property is located. In addition, unless Liberty 94.3 broadcasts from your Property, said sign is an off-premises sign, which are prohibited in every zoning district in the City. See Section 102-1292 (13) of the City of Keene Zoning Ordinance.

Kindly remove the illegal sign on or before January 25, 2013. Failure to remove the sign may result in additional enforcement action pursuant to RSA 676:17. Please contact me at (603) 352-5440 if you have any questions.

As the owner of 73-75 Leverett Street, I do not want any agents, employees, and others associated with the “City of Keene” (herein referred to as “The City”) on my property.

Due to your agents’ persistent harassment, pursuant to your NH RSA 635:2, I am hereby giving you and all your agents notice to stay away. The City or its agents will be subject to criminal prosecution and/or suit for trespass if City agents ignore this order.

If City agents have some need to come without invitation from me I would like to be contacted so as to schedule a time for City agents to conduct their “business.”

Violation of Criminal Trespass laws upon notice are misdemeanors in your society. Please be diligent in informing all your agents and subordinates of this notice.

A copy of this notice will be emailed to jmaclean@ci.keene.nh.us for your convenience in distributing this notice.

Ian, are you going to accept his invitation to do coffee sometime? I think you should.

It’s true that he stole someone’s sign, but it’s also true that he doesn’t believe it was theft because he’s been taught that the organizations called “governments” have a special authority to control how people can peacefully use their property. He appears to have good intentions and may be open to changing his beliefs and behavior.

I was very happy to see you say in your $1 bill property tax activism speech ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcfhzT2mAYA ) that you are willing to forgive people for their involvement in government criminal activity. I think it’s important to be willing to forgive them because if we are not willing to forgive them then the odds that we will be able to persuade them to change their aggressive behavior will be lower–they will be less likely to listen to us and we will be less likely to discuss these issues with them over coffee.

  Ian has had coffee with Fred on many occasions over the past 6 years. Unfortunately, Fred doesn’t want to be persuaded. His only interest with Ian is to try and get him to leave by making him uncomfortable because he believes if Ian left, the movement that he hates so much would fall apart. Obviously, I think Ian should be peaceful, but at this point, I believe a request for coffee is really just to do some digging. Fred was a detective in his former life – I imagine he loves feeling like he’s still on the job.
  
  I pity Fred. I would like to believe that he’s a nice guy just doing his job, but after many personal interactions, I’m not sure that’s the case. He seems absolutely intent on singling out Ian for personal reasons. It’s a shame, because all it really does is strengthen the view point that government employees reward their friends and punish their enemies. I have known tenants of his, and he doesn’t always follow New Hampshire renters laws, yet he has no trouble enforcing them. Hopefully Fred realizes the pettiness of this all and decides to choose love instead of hate.

I guess Fred had permission to remove the sign. Still silly that the government believes it has the right to regulate what you can and cannot put on your property.
