Not-so-Live-Free: Keene Councilors Vote Down Bar Owners who Want to Advertise their Drink Specials

Not a Beer

A power-mad city council committee voted down bar owners’ who want to be able to advertise their drink specials outside their establishments. Of course, this isn’t the only absurd, micro-managing rule these “councilors” force down the throats of peaceful business owners. It is in the news though, because a state law has repealed these ordinances across NH, but unfortunately has an opt-out provision.

The council committee voted to opt-out unanimously. Here’s the story from the Keene Sentinel’s Sarah Trefethen.

Here’s an excerpt:

Several people worried that signs outside bars would give the impression the city is a place where drinking is condoned and is a large part of the local culture.

Just pretend like drinking doesn’t happen in Keene and no one will know! Ludicrous. Unfortunately, no one showed up to testify in favor of repealing the prohibition. One “councilor” used this as his excuse to support the prohibition. Most productive people are working or relaxing after work, perhaps with an alcoholic beverage. Plus, we know what happens when someone tries to enjoy a drink at a boring council meeting.

That said, it would be nice if someone would take an interest in alerting liberty lovers to opportunities like this to speak out in favor of freedom. I didn’t find out until the night before, and I work during council meetings. 🙁

Memorial for Thomas James Ball – Friday 7/15, 8:30am @ “Superior Court”

ImmolationExactly one month to the day Thomas James Ball self-immolated at Cheshire “superior court”, friends, supporters, family, and critics of the insane “justice” system will gather to remember Thomas Ball, when the government people just want you to forget him. It happens tomorrow, Friday 7/15 at 8:30a in front of the “superior court” building at 12 Court St. in Keene. Here’s a facebook event for it. Though I created the facebook event, this event is not Free Keene’s creation. Liberty lovers at FK were invited by the event’s original creators, who I believe are the father’s rights group of which Tom Ball was a part.

If you arrive early, there’s also a possibility you’ll experience a showdown as Free Keene TV‘s crew will be attending and court security has threatened that there will be arrests of media.

See you there.

Jim Johnson, Imprisoned Indefinitely, Moved to Population

JimUpdate on Jim Johnson’s case from his wife Lauren Canario: She reports that Jim has been moved out of segregation after two weeks of being held in a small room for 23 hours per day. Jim is now in “D block” where he is able to interact with other human beings, exercise, as well as access a commissary account. Additionally, you can now visit him any day of the week between 8a-12p, 1-3:30p, and 6-10p. His new address is:

Jim Johnson
Cheshire County D.O.C.
D block
825 Marlboro Road
Keene, NH 03431

Jim is being held at the whim of robed man John P. Arnold of the Cheshire superior court. Arnold caged Jim because Jim refused to fill out a court form. Arnold calls it “contempt”. There is no date of release for Jim. There is no way that I am aware of to hold “judge” Arnold accountable for his actions.

“Judge” Edwin Kelly Refuses to Comment on His Order Banning Media from Court in Keene

As was reported earlier, video and audio devices have been banned from Keene superior and district courts unless media members beg for an exemption. Edwin Kelly, the head judge of the circuit courts, has now officially refused to comment on his order. I called the circuit court administration office at 603-271-6418 last week and left a message for his assistant, Linda J. Cammett, and then again this week I left another message. I never received a return call. Today I called again and Linda picked up the phone. That’s when she told me that Kelly will not comment on this matter. She referred me to the supreme court’s public spokesperson Laura Kiernan. Laura did talk to me about the issue. She explained that NH is SO open in comparison to the other states. I should be grateful for the opportunity to grovel in front of a robed man to get permission to have a camera in his court. It’s entirely OK for them to prohibit audio and video devices from the lobby and the rest of the premises, because it’s somehow “disruptive”. Laura can be reached at 603-271-2646.

Interestingly, the location of the administrative office of the circuit courts is a secret. They apparently don’t want the public to come to the office that they pay for with their tax dollars. All they give out publicly is a P.O. box and this number: 603-274-6418. Does anyone know where this office is physically located?
