Swanzey and Keene Police Come To The Door!!!

After attending a four hour school board meeting on Saturday morning, Ian and I were having breakfast when Ademo called, saying that the police had just been at the Keene Activity Center looking for myself, Ian, and Derrick (video to come).  Because Ademo said that a Swanzey police car was accompanying two Keene cars, we assumed that it had something to do with the high school outreach the three of us had participated in at Monadnauck Regional High School in Swanzey; which resulted in massive controversy when a student, Mason Amadeus, confronted us in opposition to the outreach we were doing at his school. Anti-BEARCAT Update: Meeting Today & New Song

There will be an Anti-BEARCAT meeting today at Colony Mills Food Court at 3PM. More details on Facebook (and while you’re there, please like Thanks But No Tanks).

After the over-capacity BEARCAT meeting last Thursday at Keene City Hall, the community has been organizing to stop the city from accepting what current Keene Mayor Kendall Lane called a tank. Weapons manufacturer LENCO tells us that BEARCAT stands for Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Counter Attack Truck which doesn’t sound any less terrifying than “Tank.” Especially in the hands of a police department that has proven it’s willingness to initiate violence against our peaceful friends and neighbors.

Please join us to oppose the further militarization of the local police department. The website thanksbutnotanks.com has been launched in addition to the comprehensive overview of Keene’s unprecedented Anti-BEARCAT campaign here on FreeKeene.com. Former Keeniac Sam A. Robrin even penned the following song after being inspired by the local resistance. It’s to to the tune of ”Joy to the World” by Three Dog Night. It’s called, what else, but… (more…)

Compassion & Liberty

People often ask me how I discovered the ideas of liberty.  Like many others, I was taught about government in school using state approved curriculum; which never mentions the ideas of liberty, self ownership, and personal responsibility.  In addition, I was raised in a extremely liberal area, which gave me a socially acceptable set of morals that included support of government social/welfare programs.  This was not because I disliked the idea of private charity and personal compassion; but rather, I believed it to be the only method of mass charity (the ability to fund care for many people at once).  It was my experience in trying to use these social programs which led me to discover the ineffective, wasteful, and harmful effects they create.  They didn’t help people.  They gave those suffering the bare minimum for survival, but wasted so much time, and came with so many requirements, that those the government “helped” would never be able to move forward.  They would become dependent on the system for survival, which skews this “help” to be thought of as a “right”… because obviously everyone feels they have a right to life.
