The city councilors voted to steal some homes this week, so liberty activists turned out in record numbers as callers to WKBK’s “Talkback”, a show hosted by two councilors, Cynthia and Paula. This is the best episode so far. Activists pack the phones and when the statists get through all they have are their usual ad hominems and whining. Cynthia is clearly shaken by so many people pointing out that she and the other councilors were stealing, however steadfastly denies it by saying that it’s not stealing because it’s the law! Liberty activists called WKBK’s Talkback this morning and discussed hemp, government and the problems it creates, the city of Keene funding a private gardening co-op with taxpayer dollars, Free Staters and peacefulness, cameras in court, motivations for disobedience, OTN Sam’s garden offer, the monopoly on violence, affecting change, spending others’ money, property taxes, voluntaryism, health codes, the Free State Project, marketizing services, and police. The smarmy statist calls in again to level his usual insults and ad hominems at liberty activists. We still do not know who he is. Fred Parsells claims in an email that he does not know who the mystery caller is, but he does appear to know that he works at Dartmouth.

When asked to describe a good anarchist, Karl Hess said, “Good neighbor, good lover, good friend.” If Free Staters could regularly display those qualities to the inhabitants of our chosen home, it would go a long way to dispel the image of wild-eyed bomb-throwing conspirators that some probably have.

This is an email between myself and one of the Keene, NH city councilors, Cynthia Georgina, who runs a local radio show on Saturday mornings called Talkback. It’s an interesting look into the reality of so many who believe in government, and the misunderstandings that keep them from embracing the principles of liberty. I recently shared one of my favorite movies, and this story is the discussion that resulted.

We finally watched it Friday night. . . .As I said, I’ll donate the DVD to the Keene Public Library so many other people can enjoy it if you don’t want it back. Anyway, we both enjoyed the film. I’m sure there’s some relevance to the Free State movement, and I really didn’t “get” that. But it was enjoyable!
Pleasantville is a story about change and how people choose to respond to change. The parallels to the FSP for me are numerous. Let’s explore the movie a bit and see if I can point out a few observations and correlations for you:
