Keene Middle School Outreach Sparks Discussions, and Another Sentinel Article

School SucksOne one hand, the Keene Sentinel’s editorial stance is that the Keene Middle School outreach is ineffective and pointless, but this feature story in today’s paper by Sarah Palermo reveals that discussions are being sparked, within the school:

If today’s news becomes tomorrow’s history, what’s a teacher to do when it’s all happening right outside the classroom window?

Throughout this school year, members of the Free State Project or a related group called Free Keene have rallied outside Keene Middle School and Keene High School, waving banners protesting the government, and distributing literature as students leave in the afternoon.

They’re careful to stay beyond the boundary of school property. And teachers try to keep politics there, too, they say.

Keene High English teacher Jonathan Perry said he hasn’t discussed the groups and their agendas in his American Studies class, but the students bring up each event as it happens. (more…)

Busybody Advocates Violence Against Topless Women

Topless TuesdaysTopless Tuesdays continues in Keene, led by a heroic young lady Keeniac who is consistently out week after week, proudly displaying her natural form alongside well over a dozen topless men. Now a local busybody has written a letter to the Sentinel demanding violence be enacted against women who choose to act free:

I recently read a story reported by The Keene Sentinel of the 18-year-old female, a self-proclaimed “Free Stater,” who paraded topless around downtown Keene this past August.

I don’t have any kids but I was outraged (as were the parents of children who reported seeing this spectacle) that the charges of lewd behavior and indecent exposure against the woman who was arrested were dropped. (more…)

Cassidy Speaks on Breasts and Equality

CassidyIf you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know Cassidy Nicosia was the trailblazer for topless equality in Keene with her walk down Main St. in 2009. She posted the following thoughts as a comment on the recent Topless Tuesday thread, and I thought her words deserved to be heard as a guest blog post:

I don’t understand why people think bare breasts are so “wrong”. The human body is beautiful, and if men are allowed to walk around topless, so should women.

My breasts are not pornographic, and not made for the eyes of lovers. They are a harmless, life-giving part of my body. I am biologically engineered with breasts to feed my child, not to gain attention from suitors.

Society has perverted what women’s breasts are seen as to enforce puritanical thought processes. The idea that woman is inherently a temptress, and all actions by her are to lure in the unsuspecting, innocent male. That’s ridiculous. And we need to stop teaching our children this; enforcing these narrow-minded ideals, and using the gun of the government to get what we want. Anyone should be able to look at a woman topless in public and barely think about it, the same way it is with men. It happens, and it’s not a big deal. (more…)
