Rain dampens bi-annual Free Keene festival
A steady rainfall and dipping autumn temperatures did not dampen the spirit of participants in the Free Keene Fest at Railroad Square Oct. 18.
One day after Keene’s annual Pumpkin Festival, the small gathering aimed to catch the attention of visitors still lingering in the area. Local residents set up shop underneath tents and sold handmade jewelry, baked goods, tamales and hot apple cider.
In addition, a tent with a FreeKeene.com sign attached to it had informational pamphlets and issues of the Free Keene Press available for visitors to read. The event, held once in the spring and again in the fall, is a collaborative effort.
One of the organizers and a contributor to the Free Keene Fest Web site, Mike Barskey, said to his knowledge none of the merchants or performers at Railroad Square applied for permits (more…)

Saturday, October 24, 2009 A.D. Day 23
The Roof
It’s coming down pretty heavy out there and there is a chill in the air. There is the sound of an occasional snore, a television with the volume on low, but low enough that you know it’s some mindless form of distraction, as it almost always is. The inmates beg for direct responses from the “corrections” officers and receive the all too familiar vague answers only people hired not to think or feel can give. There is the echo of the speakers blaring from the task masters “Mister Banker, Mister Durall, Mr. Coll, get ready for work detail!” They are headed out to see “the girls” and milk them and shovel their poop into machines… I guess the cows and the humans are on the same level… slaves of the state, or in this instance, the county as well. An “inmate” which I choose to call “Terry” (that is after all his human name, not “inmate”) says thank you to me for coming over to him with a roll of tissue to blow his nose and dry his tears he is dripping all over the letter he is writing in response to the pictures and letter he just received from his wife and his 18 month old beautiful little girl, he won’t see for at least a month… There is much more to hist story, too, more that the thugs calling themselves “everyone’s government” who dares enter this land. Terry thanks me for the stamp and envelope that I shared with him, knowing that just doing this gets me a “write up” and possibly sent to solitary confinement in East Block. (more…)

Today, I’m weak. Today I’m bewildered. Tody I miss the love of my life. Today I miss hugging all my friends and welcoming new ones with hugs and blessings. Today I shed tears, not for me entirely, but rather… today I can’t write… I just can’t.

I always figured Keene was too small for Google Street View’s van to drive through, but I’m so pleased to have been wrong! Street View is now available for nearly all of Keene west of Washington St. and Main St. for whatever reason, east of those streets did not get cataloged. Maybe they’ll come back?

Something got messed up in their posting, resulting in them showing up back in time on the blog, so I’m going to link to the ones we have so far here. When I decided to make the move to New Hampshire, I still wasn’t sure what form my activism was gong to take. I was certain only that I had to do something, or live with the consequence of knowing that I’d made no effort to push back the incursions of the State–forever tormenting myself with wondering whether some simple action of mine might have made the crucial difference.
I’ve always been linguistically oriented. I make my living proofreading and copy-editing, and my mind is always whirring with wordplay that would make a cryptic crossword puzzle comparatively comprehensible. It seemed that I could channel that ability into something useful to the liberty movement.

In many places, there will be an elaborate ritual known as an election which is used as a rather contrived justification for committing violence against innocent people. November 3rd is the date chosen by those who partake in this rather disturbing religious practice. If you’re apolitical like myself, you may feel like this day is nothing special. You’re right, but knowing that many people will be using this day to reinforce their deadly delusions, I think it’s an excellent opportunity to present them with a peaceful and rational alternative that they’ve been sheltered from for most of their lives.
I’ll be handing out fliers at one of my local polling places and I encourage others to do the same. Please feel free to download and print them out using the links provided. Also feel free to modify them to suit your particular message. There is a list of websites on the last page to go to for more information. You may have a different list in mind. I like to say “Peaceful alternatives to politics” to people as they approach and I try not to shove the flier at them in an aggressive way but rather hold it up to inspire their curiosity. Your methods may differ.
I’ve also added a new design to the Anarchy In Your Head store if you’d like to have a shirt to wear for the occasion. Just click the “Peace Not Politics” image in this post to visit the store.
