Monadnock Regional School Principal Lies to Parents About Student Privacy

Monadnock Regional Middle and High School

Monadnock Regional Middle and High School

Last week, the principal of Monadnock Regional Middle/High School sent a letter to certain parents promoting Free Keene, and for that I thank them.  However, the letter also told a big lie.  The letter’s purpose was to stir up concern among parents that some people from Free Keene have been recording on campus, (here’s the video) and further claims falsely:

This is a violation of your child’s privacy and because it happened on school property, we want to make sure you are aware of this video.

This is a lie.  It was not Derrick’s intention to record the students, and the principal’s letter does admit the students were filmed inadvertently.  That said, even if it had been his intention to record the students, it would not have been a violation of their privacy, given they were all outdoors, on ostensibly public property.  Beyond that, the school district has already informed parents their kids will be recorded, not just for their school security system, but for newspaper, radio, TV and web!  Here’s the proof.  According to the “student registration” form for the Monadnock Regional School District, which covers Monadnock Regional Middle/High School, parents agree to the following statement, in a lengthy four-page form (check the bottom of page 3 for this):

I agree to allow the student to be recorded or photographed for public use by newspaper, radio, TV and web

So, this is nothing more than a dishonest, fearmongering hit piece that is designed to make the school look like they are somehow protecting the students from us horrible bloggers by claiming they are consulting with law enforcement and have formulated plans to remove us from the premises next time.  All the while, they are recording the students on their own security system on a daily basis, and have had all parents sign a waiver allowing any media to use their images!

Thanks to the parents who took the time to send in the letter and a registration form.

UPDATED 5:03pm – Actually linked the scan of the letter this time.

  1. The first link goes to the student registration form, not any kind of letter sent to kids.

  2. ShaunnaNash Good catch!  Fixed it.

  3. I give permission for my kids to be filmed or recorded by the school and legitimate news or media company’s on school grounds with school authorization. NOT some idiot cult group activist who do not have a reason to be on school grounds and will never be allowed to approach our children! one of who likes little children a tad to mutch for my comfort. Gets your damn story straight Bernard!

  4. I’ve always found it odd, that despite all the talk about teaching kids bullying is wrong, government schools are paid for via an automatic ransom on the homes of people.  It seems like anything that must be paid for by threatening violence against people and purports to “educate” could use some lessons in how to attract “customers” in a more peaceful manner.

Capturing an income stream via force….hmmm….isn’t that theft when other people do it?

  5. I disagree with this article. Ian said, “The letter’s purpose was to stir up concern among parents that some people from http://freekeene.com/ have been recording on campus, (http://freekeene.com/2015/05/19/triumphant-return-to-high-school-outreach/) and further claims falsely:
Ian and Derrick were on school grounds recording their interactions with students while handing out flyers to the students. I saw on the video you and Derrick were having a conversation with a student. The children were on school grounds. You and Derrick were not invited to be on school grounds while the school is open. There was no reason to be making contact with students.

This is a violation of your child’s privacy and because it happened on school property, we want to make sure you are aware of this video”.

Ian said, “According to http://freekeene.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/REGISTRATION-FORM-8-8-141.pdf for the Monadnock Regional School District, which covers Monadnock Regional Middle/High School, parents agree to the following statement, in a http://freekeene.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/REGISTRATION-FORM-8-8-141.pdf:
I agree to allow the student to be recorded or photographed for public use by newspaper, radio, TV and web”   I believe you should look at the form again. There is nothing on form that says parents allow their children to be recorded with out their permission.  I have two children in that school.  I have signed all the forms and no where does it say I have to allow my children to be recorded by news media.

Ian Said, “So, http://freekeene.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/REGISTRATION-FORM-8-8-141.pdf that is designed to make the school look like they are somehow protecting the students from us horrible bloggers by claiming they are consulting with law enforcement and have formulated plans to remove us from the premises next time.  All the while, they are recording the students on their own security system on a daily basis, and have had all parents sign a waiver allowing any media to use their images”  ! School is a safe place. Adults cannot be on the property unless they are picking up their children,  or have an appointment. Ian and Derrick over stepped their bounds. No parent wants their children to be around people who have no business being there.  Your belief system is very flawed. Since I am a parent with children at the school, The new plan of contacting the police ect.. is something I very much support.

  6. FTL_Ian ShaunnaNash now that that’s outta the way

  7. They said it was inadvertent, which it was, sorta.  Not really;  being there with a camera to distribute propaganda was a deliberate, planned event.  But for the most part I understand what they mean.

The most fear that could be mongered from this letter is the idea that it was sent to every parent, since you probably didn’t film every single kid.   But the rest of it is pretty solid.

You guys did not have permission nor give school admins advance knowledge.  The video is on FK, and next time you guys show up there will be law enforcement there to provide juicy content to y’all to churn and flail about in.  Hard to say people aren’t looking long-term anymore, I guess.

It IS a violation of their privacy to be videotaped, whether it’s done by the school or by you.  Otherwise everyone is basically sayting that it isn’t a violation for you to tape them, while it IS a violation for the school to do it.  They’re forced to be at the school, and you’re exploiting that force by showing up just in time for a bottleneck as they leave the school they’re forced to be at.
All in all, the letter makes sense.  I can’t imagine any other way to end it.  “Hey those people who go out of their way to make sure they’re nothing like any of us, showed up at your kid’s school and we the school admins are aware that that’s a foreboding problem.  We get it.”  Maybe woulda been more to the heart of the matter for some, but not as nuanced.

  8. “given they were all outdoors, on ostensibly public property.”
I don’t think public property means what you intend it to mean in that sentence. There is a difference between publicly-owned and publicly-accessible property. Not all publicly-owned property is open to the general public -such as schools. Otherwise, anyone could just roam the school halls and parking lots.
Roadways are publicly-owned and publicly-accessible – not schools.
We all would agree that the White House is publicly-owned – but what do you think would happen if you tried to get on the White House grounds and film without an invitation?

  9. RichardBauman

So, if a person is forced to pay for something that they have no determination in the use of and can’t get out of paying for it without harm coming to them, what kind of property is that?
