Free Keene has just uncovered an exclusive internal draft of a recent KPD press release related to an upcoming CALEA accreditation:
Public Notice
The Keene Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment September 13-15, 2009, as part of a program to achieve recognition by verifying that it meets professional standards. The recognition program requires agencies comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: Customer Satisfaction, Responsiveness to Citizen Requests, Solution Oriented Focus Addressing Root Causes, and Victim Restitution.
The public is encouraged to provide feedback ensuring our assessors get a complete picture of how this agency is impacting the community. Refreshments will be provided to visitors who may meet with our team during business hours this week, during the Saturday/Sunday sessions or other times by appointment. We look forward to hearing from you.
Janice Hartman, CALEA Team Lead
Okay, as you may have guessed, this is not a genuine draft of the press release. I wrote it to get you thinking about how police may be a bit hypocritical and even delusional in their claim to protect and serve the interests of the public.
In Reality, if you want to “offer comments” you’ll need to . . . (more…)
I like to hang around during office hours with the staff of Jeanne Shaheen the US Senator. I may be one of the local “businessmen” who uses government for my own benefit. Do you know anything about me? Please share your information in a comment below.
In unrelated news, Shaheen has updated office hours, and she apparently doesn’t want to hear from Keene. The closest location to share your concerns is now over an hour away.
On last week’s “Talkback” on WKBK, liberty activists called to talk about parking, positive reinforcement, “disorderly houses”, and voluntary solutions. The smarmy Dartmouth guy also calls and proves he just hasn’t been paying attention.
Please join us for our weekly listening, chat, and calling sessions on Saturday mornings from 9a-12p in the Free Keene Chat room. If you’re online, you can listen to Talkback streamed live via the Liberty Radio Network and if you’re in the Keene area you can tune in to WKBK 1290 AM or 104.1 FM. The Talkback discussion thread is here on the Free Keene Forum.
What is a soul? If I had to describe my interpretation, the soul is the most defining and enduring aspect of a life. Many people claim not to believe in it, but I would posit that we all have some notion of what I just described. Some may feel the religious overtones alienate the word “soul” for them, but it’s just a word. We all believe in it, but where we differ are our views about whether a soul is eternal or not as well as whether it’s something separate from the body, possibly existing on some other plane of existence, or whether it’s incorporated with the body and decays along with it after death, or perhaps even something in between. I don’t have much in the way of answers, but I do have a lot of questions that I think are worth pondering.
Politicians have been experiencing increasing resistance to out of control government policies. People showing up to express their disapproval are labeled as disruptive protesters harassing constituents. The police in both Grafton and Keene disagree with that viewpoint. What’s behind Keene City Councilor Pamela Slack ‘s refusal to answer questions on the record for the media?
This video sets the scene for the day:
This was my discussion with Pamela Slack who was there to hear concerns on behalf of Jeanne Shaheen:
During Sam’s most recent arrest, I was feeling angry and sad at the Keene Police’s actions. I’m sure this came out during the ordeal, because his arresting officer, Lt. Peter Thomas, would say things like, “Yeah, I’m a tyrant and a thug,” or, “I know, I’m a monster.” It was those comments that led me to write this letter, in hopes of showing Sam’s captor that we are caring people who have nothing but love for everyone, even him.
Dear Peter Thomas,
This is Meg, from the Keene area activist group. I am writing to you because I believe anger is the gateway to violence, and I want none of it in my life. I’m sure you can understand the fact that someone in my position would be angry; however, you may not understand my views that led me to that point. (more…)
