Free Keene > Keene Sentinel

Just out of curiosity, I decided to check the Alexa ratings for FreeKeene.com and KeeneSentinel.com, and what do you know, the nearly four-year-old Free Keene is now beating the over 100-year-old Keene Sentinel!

Here are the current rankings. Lower numbers are better:

Free Keene’s US rating: 60,312

The Sentinel’s World rating: 254,447

Keene Police Shutdown Bake Sale for Homeless Shelter

During the Keene NH 2010 Pumpkin Festival, a mix of local law enforcement forced a local Cub Scout group to shutdown their fundraiser. They were on private property exactly has they had done the previous 4 years.

After setting the cub scouts strait, they moved on to shut down a bake sale fundraiser for the local homeless shelter.

Vigil for Gay Teens in Central Square

This information comes from Boston.com and you can read their article here.

A candlelight vigil is being held this Wednesday, October 20th, at 5:30 pm in Central Square to draw attention to suicides by teens blamed on anti-gay bullying.  AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region is sponsoring the Keep Spirit Alive vigil.  Participants are asked to wear purple to represent spirit in the pride rainbow flag.

Organizers said nine young men between 13 and 19 and a 19-year-old woman committed suicide in the United States between July and September after being harassed in their schools and communities.  A high turnout at events like this shows struggling kids can see that they’re not alone, that there are people in their community who want them to lead full and fulfilling lives.

I’m strongly encourage Keene activists and other readers of Free Keene to show up at this event.  I’ll bring some extra candles.

A lot of people don’t have purple in their wardrobe.  Please don’t let that discourage you from coming.

Police Shut Down Cub Scouts’ Cotton Candy Booth and Homeless Shelter’s Bake Sale

Here’s the news story from the Sentinel. I heard there was video taken, but I haven’t seen it pop up yet.

Many businesses and nonprofit organizations name Pumpkin Festival as their most profitable selling day or fundraiser.

But a few fundraisers were cut short by police and festival organizers.

Police shut down three vendors for operating without permits this year.

One of them was the Cub Scout Pack 297 cotton candy booth. (more…)
