Resisting the Next Big War: Peace With Iran Rally at Veterans Park

2/4 Antiwar Rally in Minneapolis, MN

On Saturday, February 4, a national day of war resistance was celebrated in the streets of cities around the nation. Following a protest at the Obama re-election campaign office opening, I headed to Veterans Park in Manchester, where there was a rally against war, especially the increasingly hyped prospect of war with Iran. In recent weeks, it seems established powers have been banging the war drums ever more loudly.

It appears to be a geographic continuance of ongoing military conquests by the US government, that in taking Iraq and Afghanistan, the next ambition would be the powerhouse that divides them. Though there’s a history of mistrust between the US and Iran, one obstacle that neither militant faction of the two countries may be able to overcome is the ability of the people of Iran and the United States to directly communicate. Keene Police Overreact to Man with Gun – Helicopters, Staties, School Lockdowns

Police State KeeneIn the same vein as the Boston police locking down a swath of the city over LED promotional signage, and the locking down of Keene’s downtown over an abandoned backpack full of beer in a city parking garage, the Keene police are at it again with more fearmongering.

What’s the story? Why are multiple state police helicopters in the sky? K9s searching the woods? Cops locking down area schools? A dozen state police cars inbound from Concord?

Some guy stormed out of a domestic incident at five this morning with a rifle and walked into the woods of West Keene.

Yep. A domestic incident, which happens all the time. A guy with a gun – this is New Hampshire! People have guns all over the place, whether openly carried or not.

Once upon a time, kids were able to carry rifles TO school. Now, all it apparently takes is a domestic disagreement to fill the skies and streets with police. What a sad statement about the fear-based society in which we live.

Get a grip.

UPDATE: Here’s an excerpt WKBK’s Dan Mitchell spreading fear on the radio all morning long, including a call from an elderly man with some perspective.

UPDATE: The man has turned himself in at Keene police station “without incident”. Except of course, the incident of a crazy, fearmongering, overreacting police state descending upon West Keene. How much did they spend on helicopter fuel alone, when police admitted up front they had no threats from the man whatsoever?

Keene Mayor Kendall Lane: “We’re going to have our own tank.”

It appears from the Cheshire TV video from December 8th, 2011 where they were discussing the BEARCAT, that then-city-councilor Kendall Lane leans to Mitch Greenwald and says to him, “We’re going to have our own tank.“. Here’s the clip, taken from the full length video of the discussion and amplified to make it easier to hear. If you’d like to see the clip in context, please see the full video – the clip happens at 2 mins in:

Occupy Keene – BEARCAT

Our success at Thursday’s city council meeting here in Keene has made national news, as featured this morning on The Agitator.

Free Staters in Keene, New Hampshire, are pushing back against the town’s proposed plan to buy a Bearcat armored personnel carrier.

Interestingly, LENCO, the company that makes the vehicle, pulled the promotional video below from its website in response to the Keene protests. DHS has given out hundreds of homeland security grants to local police departments across the country to purchase these vehicles. (more…)

LENCO Sales Reps: Keene Has The Most Passion

Sign the online petition to keep Keene Bearcat-free!

It was an amazing night. (Video to come.) Not only was it awe-inspiring to see so many people pouring out from Keene and the rest of the Monadnock region in favor of peace, but the LENCO reps actually commented afterwards that Keene was the place where they had experienced the most passionate response to their BEARCAT.

Some had suspected that LENCO had never experienced anything like Keene, as evidenced by their desperate attempt this week to cover up their Bearcat promo video. Their military-fetishizing video was subsequently re-posted to several youtube channels, ensuring it will never go away entirely.

Who testified in favor of the BEARCAT? Why city staff and former cops on city pensions, of course. Among us non-aggressors, the supermajority of the audience and speakers were in opposition. This is not speculation. I asked during my speech to have the audience raise their hands if they opposed the BEARCAT. I hope someone got a picture or video of the huge response.

Before the rest of the story, I just want to say thank you to everyone who came out last night. The city council chambers were standing-room only. (more…)
